GMC’s 2020 Acadia Gets Adventure Treatment - Trucks.com

General Motors’ premium GMC brand is rolling out its 2020 Acadia midsize SUV with a whole new look and attitude.

GMC is dressing the new Acadia with its off-road AT4 trim. It’s the second vehicle to receive the beefy look and rugged features after the trim debuted on the 2019 Sierra 1500 full-size pickup. The 2020 Acadia lineup also includes SLE, SLT and pricier Denali variants.

All the trims get exterior changes such as a new grille and refreshed front and rear fascia, but the AT4 has a bolder and more aggressive look. It has a black-chrome accented grille and standard 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires. Twenty-inch wheels are available. The AT4 also gets standard all-wheel-drive. Its engine is a carryover 3.6-liter V6 that delivers 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. With a trailering package the Acadia AT4 can tow up to 4,000 pounds.

New engine

A new turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is standard on SLT and Denali trims. It delivers 230 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. GM’s cylinder deactivation shuts off two cylinders for better fuel efficiency in light load conditions.

The Acadia’s 2.5-liter engine remains unchanged. The smaller engine makes 193 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque.

A new nine-speed automatic transmission replaces a six-speed for all engine sizes. The Acadia’s suspension has been refined to improve ride quality and handling. An electronically controlled gear shifter replaces a conventional shifter, which frees up more space in the center console.

The 2020 Acadia also gets GM’s new infotainment system, which includes navigation and operates like a smartphone (swipe, tap, pinch). The cockpit has two USB-C ports and an additional USB port in the rear, increasing the number of ports to five.

Wireless smartphone charging is available, and a high-definition rearview camera is standard on the SLT, AT4 and Denali. SLE buyers can opt for the camera. The Denali also gets a new camera rearview mirror. A heads-up display will be available following the initial launch of the vehicle.

Additional upgrades include side mirrors with LED turn signals and power folding feature available on SLT and Denali trims. All trims but the SLE get a hands-free power liftgate.

Dimensions unchanged

The refreshed Acadia’s dimensions are the same as the 2019 model. Cargo space behind the third row is still 12.8 cubic feet. That’s smaller than its peers. By comparison, the Volkswagen Atlas has 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row, and the Subaru Ascent has 17.6.

The seven-seater was in desperate need of a makeover. Last year, sales slid 20 percent to 88,600 units from 111,275 in 2017. The growing midsize category recently welcomed a new generation Buick Enclave as well as the Atlas and Ascent three-rows.

The 2020 Acadia will go on sale this fall. GM will build the SUV at its plant in Spring Hill, Tenn.
