The GMC Typhoon is a rare and celebrated breed. From 1992 to 1993, General Motors built 4,697 Typhoons with six pre-production models made in 1991. And one of those pre-production models is heading to Mecum’s Indianapolis auction in May. This GMC Typhoon, built by PAS Inc., according to the listing, was used for cladding development and emissions testing.
Due to its pre-production status, the vehicle has a few unique features that were altered before production officially started. This GMC Typhoon used cloth Syclone seats and a Syclone-sourced steering wheel. In the production version of the Typhoon, the front and rear seats were leather along with the door panels. In the prototype, they’re cloth. Another difference is the sliding rear window, which would be a fixed, single-piece window on the final version.
This is the fourth Typhoon prototype, which is indicated on the rear-view mirror and inside the gas filler door with a “T4″ marking. The prototype designation—the dyno test pipe is still in place on the exhaust—means the Typhoon comes with a rebuilt title.
New, the 4.2-liter turbocharged V6 engine made 280 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque in the production version. The prototype pairs the engine with a four-speed automatic gearbox and an estimated 11,000 believes on the odometer. The vehicle has new tires and a new headliner. Fresh fluids include oil, transmission, transfer case, and differential.
When the 1991 GMC Typhoon rolls across the auction block later this year, it’ll come with a 1992 Typhoon owner’s manual and an original, unopened owner’s kit from the 1993 model year. The listing does not indicate an estimated value; however, a quick internet search discovers sellers asking between $16,000-$32,000 for 1992 and 1993 models. This Typhoon was for sale on BringATrailer.com last year. A $12,250 bid did not meet the seller’s reserve.
