GMC Prep hosting Old Capital Classic Saturday

High school basketball season has been on for a few weeks now, but in that time something has been missing for the teams at GMC Prep School.

The varsity girls have played four games this season while the boys have competed in two, but neither squad has played at home as of yet. That will change in a big way Saturday as GMC Prep is hosting the Old Capital Classic — a full day of hoops action featuring every Bulldog basketball program taking on visiting Mount de Sales out of Macon. Play begins at 10 a.m. in GMC’s Cordell Events Center with both school’s middle school girls team taking the floor. Eighth-year GMC Prep varsity boys head coach James Lunsford says the Classic isn’t just about basketball, but bringing families with children of all ages at the school together to watch every program play.

“I really started it 16 years ago at Baldwin,” said Lunsford. “I put it together at GMC to bring the families together because I felt like that was something that was missing when I got here. It’s the only event we have in basketball where we have the middle school, junior varsity, and varsity team parents working together for one cause. I feel like it’s a great opportunity for the parents as well as the players to get a chance to get to know each other. It’s worked out real well for us.”

Admission to the Old Capital Classic is $7, which will cover entry to a full day of basketball against the visiting Cavaliers.

“All money goes to the boys and girls basketball programs,” Lunsford added. “We never make a lot, but we split it up half and half between the boys and the girls. The most important thing about this event is that it brings all the kids and families together.”

The varsity girls teams are scheduled to hit the floor at 3 p.m. before the varsity boys cap off the day’s action at 4:30. Both varsity teams should be well-rested since neither team has competed since Nov. 29 at Lake Oconee Academy. Both GMC Prep teams faced Mount de Sales its home opener back on Nov. 17. The Lady Dogs (now 4-0) took down the Lady Cavs 62-32 while the GMC Prep boys (now 2-0) were victorious by a final tally of 68-32.
