BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Severe weather hit the Valley Sunday evening into the night, causing severe damage in some areas.
Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC on Market Street in Boardman took quite a hit. Part of the building caved in and was left in several pieces. Windows and doors were also blown in.
“A significant amount of damage done to the building,” said Chief Mark Pitzer of Boardman Fire Department. “We had a gas leak in the building. The water is free flowing inside from the sprinkler system. So we’re isolating everything. We got the electric shut off and the water shut off.”
The dealership was closed Monday for cleanup.
Those with a service or sales appointment were asked to go across the street to Sweeney’s Chevrolet dealership. People with questions about sales or service can call 330-965-7144.
Other businesses in that section of Market Street also sustained some damage.
The National Weather Service is expected to be in the Valley Monday to assess the damages and determine what exactly happened.
Also in Boardman, some homes in the Angeline Estates development off Hitchcock Road were damaged.
One resident had two of his trees snapped in half. There were also several homes that had the trim ripped off.
Western Reserve Road near the Fireplace Restaurant closed after the storm knocked a tree down and it landed across the road.
In Columbiana County, Calcutta was hit hard, as several trees on one street came down.
Glenmore Fire Chief Matt Smith said the damage was as bad as he’s seen since 1984.
Power outages were widespread across the Valley. At one point over 5,000 were without service. Many customers had power restored by Monday morning.
