Everything We Think We Know About the GMC Hummer Electric Pickup - RoadandTrack.com

The Hummer brand died as a part of GM's bankruptcy announcement in 2009. Now, the company is bringing the truck back under GMC as a 1000-horsepower all-electric pickup.

Though GMC has yet to reveal the Hummer EV in-full, we still know a lot about it based on rumors and official announcements we've seen so far. We've compiled all that info for you here.

This story will be continually updated as new information is learned. The most recent update was published on 1/31/2020.

It Will Be Insanely Quick

GMC revealed a handful of specs along with the Hummer's reveal announcement January 30, and for a pickup, they're jaw-dropping. GMC rates the truck at 1000 horsepower—more than hypercars like the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder. It also quotes a torque figure of 11,500 lb-ft, though that's likely wheel torque—usually the result of engine torque multiplied by gearing, and not a realistic number to be compared to your average torque figure. Here's a more in-depth explanation, if you're curious.

Perhaps the wildest figure released by GMC, though, is the 0-60 time of 3.0 seconds flat. That makes it quicker to 60 mph than performance cars like the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and BMW M8. For a pickup, that's pretty crazy.

It Will Look Like a Hummer (at Least From the Front)

GMC has shown just a single teaser image of the Hummer EV so far, and from what we can see, it'll use a familiar Hummer-style slatted grille, modernized with a full-length LED strip along the front. If you look closely, you can see the headlights are actually the shape of an "H." As Autoblog points out, it uses six grille slats instead of the usual seven. We're curious to see how GMC styles the rest of the truck. We expect good things.

Hopefully it'll look something like this.

It'll be Revealed on May 20, 2020

As a part of GMC's initial announcement, the company confirmed it will air a 30-second commercial during the second quarter of the 2020 Super Bowl on February 2 showing its plans to revive the Hummer brand to the world. It also said it'll reveal the truck in-full on May 20, 2020. So far, the only part of the car we've seen is the grille above.

It Will Be Built in America

GMC confirmed the new Hummer EV will be built in Michigan at General Motors' Detroit Hamtramck assembly plant. GM announced a $2.2-billion investment into the plant in January 2020 to turn it into the company's first fully dedicated electric vehicle assembly plant, so this makes sense.
