GREATER MIDDLESEX CONFERENCE

BOYS SWIMMING

RED DIVISION

EAST BRUNSWICK

Coach: Sean Carney, sixth season

Last year's record: 5-2-1

Letterwinners lost: Maxim Alexeev (200 free, 500 free). 

Returners: Jr. Ryan Vandeveen (100 breaststroke, 200 IM); Sr. Aditya Vidyadharan (200 IM, 100 free); Sr. Jonathan Benowitz (100 butterfly, 100 back); Matthew Laurenciana (50 free, 100 free). 

Newcomers: Fr. Daniel Newton (100 breaststroke); Fr. Austin Ing (100 breaststroke). 

Outlook: East Brunswick always has high expectations and look to be a strong competitor at the county meet and sectionals. The boys are led by Aditya Vidyadharan, Ryan VanDeVeen, Jonathan Benowitz, Dennis Zhang and Matthew Laurenciana.

NORTH BRUNSWICK

Coach: Carrie Ann Egan-Ragavas, ninth season

Last year's record: 3-6

Letterwinners lost: Ashwin Gokhale, Robert Neumann

Returners: Sr. Ryan Kappes (200 IM, 100 free); Sr. Daniel Simpson (100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke); Sr. Thomas Kaldan (100 breaststroke); Sr. Eric Ackerman (100 breaststroke); Sr. Harris Khawaja (100 butterfly, 100 free). 

Newcomers: Eric Binbinon. 

Outlook: Although North Brunswick is a small team in numbers, the Raiders are excited about the new additions to the team and are ready to work hard and reach their potential. North Brunswick has an extremely hard working group who is willing to learn and try new things to benefit the team.

SWIMMING: HUNDREDS OF SWIMMERS WILL HELP CHILDREN IN NEED

OLD BRIDGE

Coach: Robert Weiss, 30th season

Last year's record: 1-6

Letterwinners lost: Corby EldrenKamp; Jerome Fattakhov; Pedro Pajarillo. 

Returners: Sr. John Neilson; Sr. Jonathan Viris; Sr. Karim Ellithy; Sr. Nathaniel Ocasio; So. Matthew Frantino. 

Newcomers: Michael D'Elia; Ryan Durstewitz; Shereef Ellithy; Chris Hulsart; Casey McGarrey; Ryan VanBuskirk. 

Outlook: Old Bridge is still a very small team that will continue to rebuild this season. Corby Eldrenkamp was a significant loss last season, but with a talented group returning and some strong incoming swimmers, the goal is to break .500 in dual meets.

SAYREVILLE

Coach: Andrew Rice, ninth season

Last year's record: 2-7

Letterwinners lost: Jacob Fritz (200 IM, 100 butterfly, 100 back); Andrew LaMonica (200 free, 500 free); Ryan Nurnberger (200 free, 500 free); Bryan Paez (50 free, 100 free); Brian Ng (50 free, 100 breaststroke). 

Returners: Sr. Damian Leach (50 free, 100 free); Sr. Daanyal Syed (200 IM, 100 butterfly); Sr. Devin Platt (500 free, 50 free); So. Kyle Barreiro (200 IM, 100 backstroke); Jr. Ryan Tum (200 free, 50 free). 

Newcomers: So. Henry Lynch (100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke); Fr. Tyler-Odeh Abbassi. 

Outlook: Sayreville will look to improve on last year's record with a strong core of returning swimmers and a talented incoming group of underclassmen. 

ST. JOSEPH (MET.)

Coach: Dan Cahill, fourth season

Last year's record: 10-3, GMC Champions. 

Letterwinners lost: Michael Botting (200 IM, 100 back, 100 butterfly); Trent Tighelaar (50 free); Liam Doran (50 free, 100 free, 100 butterfly); Adam Thompson (50 free, 100 free). 

Returners: So. Ben Bezcyinski (50 free, 100 breaststroke); So. Ben Lockey (50 free, 100 free, 100 breaststroke); So. Tyler Knurek (50 free, 100 free, 100 back); So. Darien Betances (50 free, 200 IM, 100 breaststroke); So. EJ Kennedy (200 IM, 100 breaststroke); So. Nick Robertson (200 free, 500 free, 100 butterfly); So. Richard Park (200 IM, 100 back, 100 breaststroke); So. Aiden Thompson (50 free, 100 free); So. Justin Ramos (50 free, 100 free); So. Newcomers: Fr. Jake Stellatella (50 free, 100 free); Fr. Giovanni Dinten (50 free); So. Varad Donwad (50 free); Jr. Brian Fahy (50 free, 100 free); So. Roman Modhera (50 free, 100 free); Fr. Tanner Tighelaar (50 free, 100 free); Fr. Jim Yu (50 free, 100 free); Fr. Kyle Talerico (500 free, 100 butterfly); So. Marcos Rodriguez (200 free, 500 free); Fr. Will Sullivan (100 breaststroke). 

Outlook: Starters for the season: Tyler Knurek, Darien Betances, Dan Badaway, Will Barnett, CJ Talerico, Marco Niro and Marcel Milewski, all of whom are leaders in and out of the pool. The goals for the season are to keep the GMC title streak alive and continue to dominate in the conference. Last year, St. Joseph made a statement in the state tournament, and this year the goals are to keep that statement and continue excelling as it did last year. The Falcons want the St. Joseph name to get back on the state level and go as far as it can in the state tournament. 

GIRLS SWIMMING

RED DIVISION

EAST BRUNSWICK

Letterwinners lost: Arielle Nones (200 free, 500 free). 

Returners: Sr. Jordan Feiner (100 butterfly, 50 free); Jr. Angelina Martinez (50 free, 100 free); Sr. Cynthia Tsui (100 butterfly); Jr. Kerry O'Brien (200 free, 500 free). 

Newcomers: Fr. Erin Wang (100 butterfly, 200 IM, 100 free); Fr. Megan Tseng (100 breaststroke, 200 IM). 

Outlook: East Brunswick always has high expectations and looks to be a strong competitor at the county meet and sectionals. The girls are lead by Angelina Martinez, Kerry O’Brien, Cynthia Tsui, Zinah Friedman, Jennifer Chen and Jordan Feiner.

MOTHER SETON

Coach: Katelyn Dauphinee, fourth season

Last year's record: 1-7

Letterwinners lost: Andrea Rojas (100 free, 50 free). 

Returners: So. Isabella Avila (200 IM, relays); Jr. Tanya Chaudhry (50 free, 500 free); Jr. Cara DeMaio (500 free, 100 back); Jr. Alyson Fakhry (100 back, relays); Sr. Kaitlin Farrell (200 IM, 100 butterfly); So. Mia Hart (100 breaststroke, relays); So. Madison Pinho (100 breaststroke, relays); Jr. Sofia Vitagliano (100 free, 200 free); Jr. Julie Witheridge (100 butterfly, 200 IM). 

Newcomers: Fr. Kendra Jackson (relays); Fr. Lorena McLean (relays); Jr. Arielle Werbel (200 IM, 100 back). 

Outlook: After graduating five seniors and its largest team in years, Mother Seton hopes to be able to remain competitive. Mother Seton will focus on the team aspect of the sport and ensure that its swimmers understand that as much as they are competing against other teams, they are primarily competing against themselves.  With that said, the Setters are looking to build on their program and continue to build a name for themselves both in and out of the pool with the work they do.

NORTH BRUNSWICK

Coach: Carrie Ann Egan-Ragavas, ninth season

Last year's record: 5-4

Letterwinners lost: Kiera Welsh

Returners: Jr. Megan Gilmore (100 breaststroke); Sr. Valerie Kozyrenko (100 back, 200 free); Sr. Holly Maris (500 free). 

Newcomers: Angali Gupta

Returners: Jr. Leila Caraos; Sr. Sofia Ezzaki; Jr. Jessica Guarrera; Jr. Stephanie Guillen-Padilla; So. Megan Hussey; So. Alexandra Mironescu; Jr. Cassidy Mulligan; So. Melissa Neglio; Jr. Maya Ourari; Jr. Kayla Ruffini; So. Lili Shay; So. Sabrina Stark; So. Lia Vendel. 

Newcomers: Ashley Chui; Alyah Diab; Kristin Gissubel; Phyllis Goodridge; Toni Gordon; Emily Hopkins; Hannah Kretkowski; Kaitlyn McGarrey; Gianna Porcelli; Mairead Reilly; Niyati Saravanakumar. 

Outlook: Old Bridge will be a very young and strong team this season. The team goals are to win the GMC Red Division,  the GMC Championships, and place high at the NJSIAA sectionals. The leaders are expected to be Sofia Ezzaki, Cassidy Mulligan, Melissa Neglio, Kayla Ruffini, Lili Shay, Lia Vendel and Alexandra Mironescu, along with a strong group of freshmen.

SAYREVILLE

Coach: Andrew Rice, ninth season

Last year's record: 1-7-1

Letterwinners lost: Angelina Hansel (200 IM, 100 butterfly); Elizabeth Dobrzynski (200 free, 500 free). 

Returners: So. Leah Barreiro (200 IM, 100 back); Jr. Julia Smagacz (100 breaststroke); Sr. Kaitlyn Firedman (200 free, 500 free); Jr. Angela Tramontana (200 free, 500 free); Sr. Faith Gregory (50 free, 100 free). 

Newcomers: Fr. Elizabeth Astarita; Fr. Bridget Broncales; Fr. Olivia Cruz. 

Outlook: Sayreville will look to its experienced upperclassmen to lead this team this season. 

CO-ED SWIMMING

GMC WHITE DIVISION

COLONIA

Coach: David DeGraw, fifth season

Last year's record: 5-5

Letterwinners lost: Hirad Sharifian (100 free, 50 free). 

Returners: So. Nicole Ben-David (100 butterfly, 500 free); Sr. Sylvia Rozalski (200 free, 100 backstroke). 

Newcomers: Fr. Adrian Romej (100 free, 50 free). 

Outlook: Colonia looks to continue its progress on the path toward greatness. The Patriots are very excited to welcome some new talent to our family, in particular freshman Adrian Romej, who comes to the team as a seasoned club swimmer and coach DeGraw anticipates him making a large impact on the overall team’s success. Returning sophomore Nicole Ben-David is also looking to make an impact this year as she placed second overall at last years GMC Championships in the 100 butterfly and 500 free. This year Colonia is hoping for a first place champion. Finally, senior Sylvia Rozalski looks to finish out her last year strong after placing fifth overall at last years GMCs in the 100 backstroke. The team’s motto is "Many Talents One Family" and with this in mind, the Patriots will work together as one unit focusing on individual talents to achieve the team’s objective of defining greatness. Colonia is looking forward to displaying its talents in the weeks ahead.

PERTH AMBOY

Coach: Kristen DiTommaso, 10th season

Last year's record: 3-8

Letterwinners lost: Pedro Jimenez (50 free, 100 breaststroke); Jose Concepcion (100 back); Greg Tamo (50 free, 100 back); Lizangie Rodriguez (100 back); Jessica Vasquez (100 back); Stephany Bolanos (500 free, 200 IM). 

Returners: Jr. Enmanuel Plasencia (freestyle, breaststroke); Jr. Brandon Rivera (freestyle, IM, butterfly; broke four school records last season); Jr. Robert Vasquez (freestyle); Sr. Myles Bolanos (freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke); Jr. Kayrme Estevez (freestyle); Sr. Isis Irias (freestyle); Sr. Mia Velasquez (freestyle); Jr. Jordan Abreu (freestyle). 

Newcomers: Sr. Carlos Bolanos (freestyle); Fr. Joshua Preza (freestyle); Fr. Saniya Posey (breaststroke, IM, freestyle); Jr. Samantha Soto (breaststroke, backstroke).  

Outlook: Starters this year will be Brandon Rivera and Saniya Posey. Perth Amboy is hoping with its newcomers learning so quickly, it will be more competitive than in year's past. The goal is to win all of its non-conference meets and win two in the conference. Rivera had a strong sophomore year, breaking four school records in the IM, butterfly, 500 free and 200 free. He is looking to continue to improve and break the backstroke record along with some relays. Posey and Joshua Preza are the strongest freshman and will make a big contribution immediately.

SOUTH PLAINFIELD

Coach: Tom Conneely, eighth season

Last year's record: 3-11

Letterwinners lost: Ward Al-Ktaish (200 free, 500 free); Ming Cheung (200 IM); Jake Kolodziej (50 free, 100 free); Tyson Nguyen (100 butterfly, 100 free); Arjun Patel (100 breaststroke); Meera Patel (100 butterfly); Alexia Wargacki (100 free); Alyzah Ziga (200 IM team record holder, 100 backstroke team record holder). 

Returners: Sr. Anmarie Aquino; So. Isaac Atehortua; So. Colin Carey; Sr. Jorge Durango; Sr. Dom Faustini; So. Olivia Glynn; Sr. Halyna Ho; So. Laryssa Mallqui; So. Camilla Martinez; Sr. Thomas Nguyen; Jr. Timson Nguyen; Jr. Nicole O'Sullivan; So. Mark Santiago; Jr. Kristina Shaw; Sr. Max Strassburger; So. Amy Swartz; So. Bianca Valdeiglesias; So. Kate Ziga.

Outlook: All of the veteran swimmers are expected to start and the seniors will carry most of the workload for South Plainfield this season. Seniors Anmarie Aquino, Halyna Ho, Dominic Faustini, Thomson Nguyen and Max Strassburger are all expected to take on a leadership role as captain in and out of the pool.

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS

Coach: Amanda Cleveland-Miller, ninth season

Last year's record: 

Letterwinners lost: Sarah Hardy. 

Returners: Jr. Brianna Dy; So. Grace Neno; So. Sydney Zeszotarski. 

Newcomers: Sophie Hardy; Gabriella Hamm; Sarah Shao; Sierra Smith. 

Outlook: St. Thomas Aquinas has a roster of 21 swimmers this season and will be drawing strength from its group of talented underclassmen. There are only four boys on the roster, so the team expects another tough year ahead in the White Division.
