MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Georgia Military College met up with one of its alums this week who just so happens to be playing a big role in Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta on Sunday.
Trent Brown is the starting left tackle for the New England Patriots, who will face off with the Los Angeles Rams at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Essentially, he's tasked with protecting all-time great quarterback Tom Brady's blindside.
But before Brown made it big, he spent two years honing his skills and shaping his character at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville.
“I truly believe the things I learned [at GMC] helped me get to where I am today,” Brown told GMC when he met with school officials this week. “I went there with the goal in mind that I was going to graduate, go to a D-1 university, then hopefully live out my dream of playing football. Now I am. GMC is definitely a second home and it forever will be.”
The Albany native arrived at GMC in 2011.
Under the direction of GMC Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Bert Williams, Brown mastered his craft and graduated in 2013. He then joined the University of Florida football program for two years before being selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the 7th round of the 2015 NFL Draft.
Nearly four years later, Brown is competing for his first Super Bowl title with the Patriots.
“I never had a plan B -- either football or basketball had to work and luckily football did,” Brown said. “This is my first time even in the postseason, period. It still hasn’t really hit me yet that I’m about to play in the Super Bowl, but it’ll probably hit me Saturday night or early Sunday. It’s been a fun experience. Hopefully it won’t be my last.”
Brown's former GMC coach says watching one of his former players go on to fulfill a career dream is both exciting and gratifying.
“It’s always great to see one of your former players continue on and be successful, especially so when they attain a level like the Super Bowl,” Williams said. “It is exciting and gratifying to know you had a part in his development, helping him make the transformation from high school athlete to collegiate athlete at Georgia Military College.
"To see him graduate from GMC, go and do great things at the University of Florida and then be highly successful in the NFL is extremely rewarding.”
In addition to Brown, several other players from both the Patriots and Rams have ties to the state of Georgia.
Rams head coach Sean McVay is enjoying a homecoming as well, as he graduated from Marist School in Brookhaven in 2004.
