GREATER MIDDLESEX CONFERENCE WEEK 5 FAN-VOTE GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 12 North Brunswick (4-1) at Piscataway (4-1), Friday, 7 p.m.
On the line: This game is for the White Division title now that Piscataway was awarded a forfeit victory over New Brunswick for having participated in that division game with an ineligible player. North Brunswick finished second to Sayreville last year in the White Division, while Piscataway claimed the Red title on its way to a 13-0 record and the North, Group 5 bowl title. North Brunswick was 10-2, losing a second time to Sayreville in the Central Jersey, Group 5 championship game.
Last meeting: 2015. Current Rutgers running back Elijah Barnwell rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns and Danny Haus passed for three touchdowns, including two to Nazir James, to send Piscataway to a 42-18 victory. This is the first time since that season the two occupy the same division.
North Brunswick results: Defeated South Brunswick, 26-0, Sept. 6; Lost to St. Joseph (Met.), 22-20, Sept. 14; Defeated Sayreville, 22-7, Sept. 22; Defeated Edison, 35-7, Sept. 27; Defeated New Brunswick, 33-8, Oct. 4.
North Brunswick on offense: Myles Bailey has been and continues to be the lively pulse of this attack, compiling 699 yards and scoring seven times on just 77 carries. The speedy senior entered the season already as the program’s all-time rushing leader, and he set the school mark for rushing touchdowns when he crossed the goal line Sept. 14 in the Raiders’ 22-20 loss to St. Joseph (Met.). The Raiders also use Chris Arnold and Dahvey Hicks to share some of the rushing duties with Bailey, and they rarely ever throw. That means North Brunswick can expect to see Piscataway jamming the box and daring Michael Baradhi to open up. The senior stepped in after the Raiders’ initial starter left the team early this season, and has attempted just 13 passes in the last three games. Mike Gonzalez, Mike Ladjack, Jerron Douglas, Tyrell Pereira and Amaan Maiden head up the blocking effort.
North Brunswick on defense: Ends Leon Lowery and Samod Wingo - the school’s two most prolific sack kings ever- make either edge a space-choking, body-aching nightmare for opposing running backs and also quarterback who scramble in one’s direction due to the pressure coming from the other side, or in the middle from nose tackle Isiah Oduro. Linebackers Pereira, Arnold and Asaru Napier and backs Hicks, Demi Jenkins, Marquis Perry, Demonte Blount contribute to a group that has allowed only 22 points in the last three games.
Piscataway results: Defeated Franklin, 40-7, Sept. 9; Defeated Sayreville, 21-7, Sept. 13; Defeated Edison, 28-7, Sept. 20; * Lost to New Brunswick, 13-7, Sept. 27; Lost to St. Joseph (Met.), 15-14, Oct. 5.
* New Brunswick game declared forfeit victory.
Piscataway on offense: The Chiefs hope to revive a ground attack that is typically their clock-chewing calling card, though has been a stalled vehicle of late. At this time last season, Piscataway had rushed for 17 touchdowns, and could have had more if starters remained in games longer than three quarters in those blowout wins. The Chiefs have rushed for 11 touchdowns this season, and just two over the last two games, a 13-7 loss to New Brunswick (since ruled a forfeit win) and a 15-14 setback to St. Joseph (Met.). Senior Khristian Hernandez is the team leader with 357 yards and five touchdowns behind the blocks of Angel Laporte, Nick Lodato and Johaurrie Woolfolk. Hernandez’ twin brother, Kristopher, has rushed for four touchdowns and passed for three at quarterback, and fellow senior Marcus Petite has rushed for two TDs.
Piscataway on defense: This group has not only kept Piscataway in every game with its balanced coverage and customary speed and toughness, but has helped open up a few in the second half by having a direct hand in the scoring by producing turnovers. Like North Brunswick, Piscataway has two troublesome figures at DE in Marcel Walker (4.5 sacks), Lodato (2.0) and Daylin Washington. Their pressure has been a coverage boon for Kristian Hernandez (three interceptions), Christian Davis (two), Sherrod Cooper, Aamir Woods and Kristopher Hernandez. Petite and Rocco Bellamy anchor the linebacker corps.
Prediction: North Brunswick, 21-7.
