General Motors is on a crossover kick, pinning much of its business success on selling high-profit margin crossovers and pickup trucks to help subsidize its future electric and autonomous vehicle development. And (arguably) one of its more exciting recent entries is the Chevrolet Blazer. While the new Blazer lacks the off-road prowess or ruggedness of the original models, it does feature sporty driving characteristics and an appearance that matches. However, the new crossover has yet to spawn a GMC sibling; the GMC Acadia is as close as it gets for the time being. But if one arrives, there’s one company eager to revive the legendary GMC Typhoon. That company is Specialty Vehicle Engineering, or SVE.
If the SVE name sounds familiar, that’s because the firm recently made waves by announcing plans to revive the GMC Syclone – a GMC Canyon-based pickup truck. For that, SVE increased the Canyon’s 3.6L LGY V6 engine output to 455 horsepower thanks to a supercharger. SVE is also offering an available Sport Suspension Package that lowers the truck’s ride height while adding thicker traction bars, new bushings, stiffer front and rear shocks, and a rear sway bar. The package looks sinister.
Now imagine that performance packed into a GMC version of the new Chevrolet Blazer. It would be called the Typhoon, as intended, and would have the performance chops to support its iconic name. It is interesting, though, that SVE is waiting for a GMC version of the Blazer. Such a model isn’t in the works, as far as we know, which means there may be a lot of disappointed GMC Typhoon fans out there still waiting for its return. As such, SVE could simply tune the GMC Acadia, as it shares its C1 platform (and many other mechanical bits) with the Blazer.
Either way, the thought of a new GMC Typhoon with, say, 455 horsepower, makes the ongoing crossover invasion a little easier to digest.
