GMC girls lacrosse recap: Player of the Week, rankings & more, April 19 - NJ.com

Each week, NJ Advance Media will break down each conference in New Jersey girls lacrosse, from the Player of the Week to top storylines and everything in between.

See the latest information and news from the Greater Middlesex Conference.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Alexis Rich, North Brunswick, So.

Rich has played a vital role in North Brunswick's ascent through the GMC this season and had another strong week for the Raiders. Over a three-game stretch, Rich compiled 12 goals in games against South Brunswick, Edison and two-time defending county champion Monroe. She has 40 goals this season as North Brunswick looks to make a run in the upcoming GMC Tournament.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE GMC?

Old Bridge has come alive as the team to beat: Since an 11-7 loss to North Brunswick in the opening week of the season, Old Bridge has rattled off seven straight wins and has even stepped outside the comfort of Middlesex County with wins over Middletown South and Scotch Plains-Fanwood.

Ella Sblano (31 goals, three assists), Abigail Zimmerlink (28 goals, 13 assists) and Linsday Shafer (25 goals) have all been important in Old Bridge's rise this season and the Knights will have a strong case for a high seed in the county tournament in a few weeks.

Don't sleep on North Brunswick: It's been a few years since North Brunswick's roster was littered with record-breaking players, but this team has as good a chance as any to win a county title for the Raiders. North Brunswick lost its first two games of the season — both out of conference — but has since won nine in a row, including wins over Old Bridge, South Brunswick and Monroe, the winner of the last two GMC Tournament titles.

Hayley Greenberg has joined Rich on attack for a team hungry to prove itself as the best in Middlesex County.

A new role for Monroe: After dominating play in the GMC Tournament the past two seasons, this has been a different type of run for Monroe. The Falcons are in the middle of the pack in the conference and worked their way back to .500 this week after opening the season with back-to-back losses.

Monroe has lost to North Brunswick twice and Old Bridge once, so cutting into that gap will be key with hopes of making a run at a third straight county title.
