MyCentralJersey.com will be awarding a “Game Ball” each week to the Greater Middlesex Conference high school baseball player or team who receives the most votes in our online poll.
Sports writer Greg Tufaro will write a feature story about the top vote-getter, so make your votes count.
Voting closes Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Those who made our “Game Ball” ballot, which can be found at the bottom of this story, are listed in alphabetical order.
Nominations are based on performance from Monday through Saturday.
Ethan Calcano, Sayreville
The cleanup batter had a huge week, going 6-for-16 with nine RBI, three doubles and a triple while helping the Bombers win four of five games to improve their record to 6-3. Calcano's two-run double highlighted a five-run outburst in the fifth inning of Sayreville's 7-2 win over North Brunswick. He went 2-for-2 with an RBI in a 3-1 over Old Bridge, which had a five-game winning streak snapped in the loss. Calcano went 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI and a run scored in an 8-3 win over Woodbridge. He is batting a team-leading .393 with 15 RBI. Calcano was called up to the varsity last season to replace an injured starter. After batting in the two hole a year ago, he has played an integral role in helping Sayreville replace its four top hitter, all of who graduated.
Sal Della Fave, Edison
The freshman had a big week in helping the Eagles, who have won three of their last four games, improve to 6-2. Della Fave went 7-for-19 over a five-game stretch, hitting safely in each contest. The rookie helped Edison record one of the biggest victories of the season, capping a four-run outburst in the seventh inning with a two-out, two-RBI double as the Eagles rallied for a 5-4 comeback win over perennial power St. Joseph. With his team trailing in that contest 4-0, Della Fave stepped to the mound in relief and hurled five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and one walk in an economical 55-pitch effort, giving the Eagles a chance to win. He tamed a Falcon lineup that is among the best in the conference with a .370 team batting average.
Sonny Fauci, Old Bridge
Two days after a teammate hurled a no-hitter, the senior righthander duplicated the feat in Monday's 3-0 shutout of J.P. Stevens. Fauci, who has signed a National Letter of Intent with St. John’s University, struck out seven and walked three. He relied on a fastball, curveball, changeup and cutter in a 95-pitch outing. Fauci has not allowed a run in three starts, extending his string of scoreless innings to 20 with six shutout frames of one-hit ball against Monroe on Saturday. Fauci outdueled South Brunswick ace Jacob Ciccone (Lafayette College signee) in a 4-0 season-opening win. Fauci is batting a team-leading .450 (9-for-20) while topping the club in runs (seven), hits (nine), walks (six) and doubles (three).
J.P. Stevens
After getting no-hit by Old Bridge in consecutive games, the Hawks rebounded to win their next three contests, outslugging Bishop Ahr for a 12-10 victory and sweeping a series from Piscataway with back-to-back wins by scores of 5-3 and 7-2. The latter marked the 200th career victory for veteran head coach Dave Marzano. The Hawks (6-2) have already equaled their win total of 2017 and are two wins shy of matching last year's victory total. With a 4-2 Red Division mark, J.P. Stevens has also already won more division games this season than it had in each of the previous two years. Some terrific baseball is being played in Edison Township this sprng. Crosstown rival Edison is also off to a 6-2 start. The Hawks and Eagles meet on Monday.
Matt Sot, St. Joseph
The junior centerfielder continued his torrid early season pace, going 9-for-16 (.563) with eight runs, seven RBI, three doubles, a triple and three stolen bases during five games last week, raising his batting average to .500. Sot leads the Falcons in doubles (three), triples (one), stolen bases (five) and is tied for the team lead in RBI (nine). He is second on the club in batting average, has reached base safely in every game and has scored a run in every game but one. Sot has been a quintessential leadoff batter for St. Joseph and is playing a stellar center field. He possesses blazing speed on the basepaths and covers significant territory in the outfield.
