With so many new players to the varsity lineup, learning quickly will be the key to the team’s success. Led by seniors Emily Tavares and Alexis Medovoy, the primary goal is to win the Red Division. Additionally, after making runs to the semifinals in both the state sectional and county tournaments last year, the team is looking to go a little deeper in each tournament. The Hawks have been putting in a lot of work and they are excited to show what they can do. The girls love working together and they continue to be challenged to get better every day.

Newcomers: So. OF Sam Wares; So. OF Kacey Loughlin.

Outlook: Behind returning sophomore pitcher Angelina Casey, Old Bridge is looking to play solid defense and let its bats take care of the rest. The Knights have a solid core of players returning who have been playing together for years and have great chemistry with each other on and off the field. The team is for the offense to be powered by senior shortstop Jessica Gaughan and sophomore first baseman Paige Nugent. Old Bridge is looking to build on last season as the Knights fell just short of the GMC Tournament title and also compete for a Red Division title.

PISCATAWAY

Last season: 4-14

Top letterwinners lost: OF Caitlin Erdman; 2B Jessica Alicia; SS Jen Majorczak; OF Tiana Reid.

Newcomers: Fr. INF/OF Julia Stewart; Fr. INF/P Ashley Delair; Sr. OF Ashelye Chantre; So. INF/OF Alexis Valenti; Fr. INF Vanessa Freeman; Jr. C Asia Eaddy; Jr. OF Kimberly Hopkins.

Outlook: Piscataway lost some valuable players to graduation last year, however the team gained some stud freshmen and have a few players from JV last year. These girls have really worked extremely hard to earn a potential spot. The team goals are to make each other better and focus on the little things each day. Coach Scinto expects leadership from the two captains, senior catcher Ariana Percivale (who will be playing at TCNJ next year) and senior first baseman Taylor Maher. Both players lead the team on and off the field by example, working hard at practice each day to make themselves and their teammates better. This particular group of girls gel very well together and are a mix of returning and new players. Coach Scinto really looks forward to this season and challenging athletes in different positions.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK

Coach: Heather Wells, seventh season

Last season: 21-4, GMC Tournament semifinalist, Central Group IV finalist.

Top letterwinners lost: SS Carly Rybinski (four-year starter, .560 BA, 187 H, 146 R, 76 RBI, 104 SB).

Returning players: Sr. P Gabriella Brancaccio (career 199 IP, 61 ER, 122 K, 30-4 record); Sr. 3B/C Lindsey Warick (career 109 H, 76 R, 100 RBI, 27 2B, 5 3B, 18 HR); Sr. Skylar Trimpert (.330 BA, 27 RBI last season); Sr. C Georgia Logothetis; Jr. SS Jessica Stadler (career .463 BA, 45 R, 57 H, 32 RBI); Jr. P Alexandra Zetchus (.359 BA, 7 R, 23 H, 10 RBI, 5 2B, HR, 49 IP, 49 H, 27 R, 17 ER, 10 BB, 24 K, 7-2 record in 2018); Jr. 2B Nina Squaires; Jr. DP/C Olivia Sanders; So. OF Ava Hutchison; So. OF Serena Hutchison; So. OF Giana Rappaccio.

Newcomers: Fr. OF/P Elizabeth Mullen; So. 2B/1B/DP Olivia Minucci; Sr. DP/C/3B Annmarie Elgendy.

Outlook: This year South Brunswick has three varsity captains that have a ton of experience playing in high pressure situations. They know what needs to be done in order to be successful and they have learned from experiencing success and by mistakes made in the past and are ready to lead the team. All three contribute individual talents and have very different leadership roles as captains. Lindsey Warick is a work horse and expects the same out of every player on the team. She is the field coach. Gabriella Brancaccio has a cool head and sets a calm focused tone. She reminds the team to have fun but go hard. Skylar Trimpert keeps them all in line and will show her teammates what it means to follow through in big situations. She brings the fire. Expectations are high and the team is hungry from last year. Falling to Old Bridge in the GMC Tournament semifinals to Old Bridge and losing to Montgomery in the Central Group IV final has left a bad taste in their mouths. Team goals include advancing to the GMCT final and the Vikings will strive to win the GMC Red Division and be highly competitive in state play. The coaching staff expects each team member to put forth 100 percent effort everyday out of respect for the game. Anything else is unacceptable. The pitcher, catcher, first baseman and third baseman are all seniors and this diamond will set the tone of the season.

WHITE DIVISION

CARTERET

Coach: Brian Cherepski, first season

Last season: 10-11

Top letterwinners lost: 3B Gineyra Rios (29 H, 26 R, 12 RBI, 12 BB).

Newcomers: Fr. SS Aamori Patterson; Fr. Util/INF Amyiah Sanchez; Jr. OF Atavia Palms; Jr. OF Brianna Broehl.

Outlook: Coach Brian Cherepski played baseball and football at Carteret from 2000-04, and played rugby at the University of Delaware. Cherepski started coaching softball at Carteret in 2009, and has also been an assistant varsity football coach. He coached five years at St. Joseph (Met.) and the last five years at East Brunswick. The projected lineup will be Chloe Oblepias at pitcher, Jennah Schiraldo at catcher, Jessica Freeman at first, Ashlee Lavan at second, Aamori Patterson at short, Gabriella Iannazoo at third, Atavia Palms in left, Melody Caces in center and Ava Dinicola in right. The Ramblers are returning eight varsity letter winners from last season, so expectations are high. They are moving up from the Blue Division to the White Division, so competition will be tougher. With the veteran players, the Ramblers are hoping to improve on last season's record of 10-11. Carteret expects to be very competitive in the White Division and make some noise in the postseason tournaments.

COLONIA

Coach: Ann Cyrana, 16th season

Last season: 14-12

Top letterwinners lost: Jess Donovan; Kaitlynn Kelly; Yami Moreta; Sarah Soos.

Returning players: Sr. C Julie Dos Santos (.448 BA, 20 R, 30 H, 12 RBI, 4 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR); Sr. OF Lauren Godfrey; Sr. 2B Kelli Mulrooney; Sr. OF Casey Mulrooney (.267 BA, 7 R, 4 H, 2 RBI); Sr. SS Caitlyn Hroncich (.382 BA, 23 R, 26 H, 11 RBI, 5 2B); Sr. 3B Lauren Wright (.436 BA, 15 R, 24 H, 32 RBI, 7 2B); Sr. 1B Alivia Taveres-Nemes; Jr. P Rebecca Hoff; Jr. OF Lexy Carlos.

Newcomers: Jr. Emmery Rivera; Jr. Kaitlyn Mohan; Jr. Angela Covert; Jr. Alexa Scala; So. Alissa Fasulo; So. Sabrina Wilson.

Outlook: Colonia has a good chunk of players with experience. The defense should be solid, pitching and offense needs work to get the Patriots where they need to be. The seniors are expected to step up and lead the way and they are capable. Colonia lost eight games by one run in walk-off fashion last season and are working to move that in the other direction.

J.F. KENNEDY

Coach: Maureen Gallagher, 10th season

Last season: 13-9

Top letterwinners lost: SS Madison Buttitta (.284 BA, 19 R, 5 2B); OF Julia Sinatra (.333 BA, 14 RBI, 9 2B, 2 HR).

Returning players: Sr. P/OF Jillian Sims (.308 BA, 20 H, 22 R, 12 RBI, 70 IP, 55 H, 23 ER, 105 K, 2.30 ERA, 5-5 record); Jr. P/2B Erin Sinatra (.250 BA, 15 H, 7 RBI, 4 2B, 71.3 IP, 54 H, 25 ER, 101 K, 23 BB, 2.45 ERA, 8-4 record; Sr. 1B Katie Baumgarten (.400 BA, 24 H, 18 RBI, 7 2B, .650 SLG); Sr. SS Bianca DiSanto (.333 BA, 20 H, 8 RBI, 4 2B); Jr. 3B Ashlee Ayr (.268 BA, 15 H, 10 RBI, 5 2B); Jr. C Jenny Gordon (.365 BA, 23 H, 11 RBI, 3 2B, 3 HR); So. Newcomers: Fr. 3B Sofia Hindy; Fr. 2B/OF Marissa Lugo; Sr. INF Marissa Buccholz; Sr. 2B/OF Sydney Mellage; So. OF Kyley Mellage.

Outlook: J.F. Kennedy has set its expectations very high this season as the team has a very experienced group with some big game experience from last year. Jillian Sims, a four-year starter in the circle, paired with Erin Sinatra, a three-year starter, pack a one-two punch. Senior leadership, coming from All-Conference player Katie Baumgarten at first and Bianca DiSanto who is moving back to her natural position at short, will anchor the infield.  Ashlee Ayr, another three-year starter, is at third and newcomers Sofia Hindy, Sarah Velez and returner Alexis Claiborne are competing hard for second base. Jenny Gordon will handle all catching responsibilities behind the plate and the Mustangs are looking for her to build on her solid 2018 season offensively. The outfield consists of two newcomers, Sydney and Kyley Mellage as well as returners Olivia Sims, Carly Mackenzie and Gianna Zube. The competition for those precious spots has been fierce and is producing inspired practices. The coaching staff is proud of the work these young ladies have put in during the offseason and want to continue to push them to higher levels.

NORTH BRUNSWICK

Coach: Mary Rossi, first season

Last season: 11-10

Top letterwinners lost: CF Alyssa Contreras (.333 BA, 13 R, 11 H, 10 RBI, 2 2B, 3 HR).

Returning players: C Kayla Scher (.433 BA, 23 R, 29 H, 18 RBI, 13 2B, 4 HR); P/SS Tara Jennings (.291 BA, 8 R, 16 H, 4 RBI, 109.2 IP, 141 H, 78 R, 58 ER, 38 BB, 61 K, 8-9 record); INF Allison Ward (.279 BA, 20 R, 19 H, 3 RBI, 9 BB, 5 SB); OF Cassadie Speed; 1B Mia Santiago (.326 BA, 13 R, 14 H, 9 RBI, 12 BB); 3B/OF Sydnee Hopson (.271 BA, 7 R, 13 H, 5 RBI 3 2B); So. Outlook: Coach Mary Rossi played softball at Notre Dame High School, Mercer County Community College and Rider University and she has received several Student Athlete and Sportsmanship Awards. She has coached at North Brunswick for four years as the JV coach, the varsity assistant and now the head coach. This year, North Brunswick has high expectations for the program as there are nine returning varsity players, many with years of softball experience. The Raiders lost two integral players, Alyssa Contreras and Gabriella Puleio, which leaves the team with one starting returning outfielder, Cassadie Speed. Tara Jennings will continue to be on the mound along with Lauren Duffy and Mia Colon. North Brunswick assistant coach Crystal Carlucci is working closely with the pitching staff to make sure they are accurately hitting their spots. Kayla Scher and Adriana Barnes will split time at catcher and both have big bats. The infield is looking the same as last year with Mia Santiago, Veronica Giraldo, Alison Ward and Sydnee Hopson. The outfield will have some new faces, such as Aniyah Isaac, who will use her speed in center field, Adriana Barnes, Duffy and Colon. The main goal this year is to have a winning record and coach Rossi wants the players to be confident, know their skills and have fun! The Raiders have a very talented group this year and Rossi holds them to a high standard. The players know the game well and the job for the coaches is to continue those fundamentals and explain the game as they see it so the players can have a better understanding of the choices that are being made. Rossi wants the seniors to really step up, be vocal and lead this team to a championship. The Raiders have the talent, the line-up and the heart!

She has been around softball her entire life as she played in high school and in college in Puerto Rico and brings knowledge of the game and skill development to the team. Softball for Perth Amboy is not about the wins and losses, it’s about the time spent in and out of the classroom excelling in academics and learning the sport. The Panthers strive to have student-athletes where academics, discipline, responsibility, accountability and respect are priorities. This season, with a ninth-grade pitcher, Perth Amboy is looking to increase its potential to compete this season. The Panthers have returning players who are eager and highly motivated to take the field behind their new pitcher and excel in the sport of softball.

SKYLAND CONFERENCE

RARITAN DIVISION

FRANKLIN

Coach: Nicole Monfasani, first season

Last season: 0-17

Top letterwinners lost: Kyana Torres (P).

The first-year head coach, who spent the past four years as a Franklin assistant, said the club has been working hard and she’s expecting her players’ skill levels to soar. Seniors Janally Diaz, Kafas and Munoz are expected to handle the leadership, with sophomores Ciccone and Straub also pitching in after strong freshman campaigns. DeLorenzo heads the list of returners, a third-team All-Area pitcher last year, she gave the Argos a consistent arm in the circle and bat at the plate, while Battista and Kutner are also back after enjoying standout campaigns. Scheflen is also back as a key bat, with Hankerson, a rookie, expected to contribute immediately.
