South Plainfield set to compete for 11th straight GMC tournament title - TAPinto.net

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - It is not exactly a secret who the favorite is for this year’s Greater Middlesex Conference wrestling tournament team title. South Plainfield High School will once again be the top-dog in the conference tournament as the team will attempt to capture its 11th straight GMC title.

While the Tigers (17-2) have long been known for sending top-flight talent into GMC tournament competition, this year’s squad is particularly accomplished.

With four wrestlers with 100 or more career wins on South Plainfield’s team this year, the Tigers will have six of its wrestlers competing as the top-seed in their respective weight class.

Sophomore Anthony White will be bringing in a 19-1 season record when he represents South Plainfield as the top-seed at 120 pounds. Seniors David Loniewski (126), Joe Sacco (145), Thomas Fierro (126), Luke Niemeyer (195) and Zach Delvecchio (220) will all be the top-seed in their respective weight classes. Loniewski, Niemeyer and Zach Delvecchio all have just one loss on the season record so far.

Zach Delvecchio will be looking to become a four-time conference champion. Niemeyer and White will also be returning as champions from last year's tournament.

Senior Brendan Hedden (182) and freshman Jacob Delvecchio (113) will be the two-seeds in their weight classes, while seniors Marc Giordano (152) and Alex Amato (138) will compete as three-seeds.

Newcomer freshman Julian Irizarry will be the fourth-seed at 106-pounds. Senior Sebastian Santos will be a 13th-seed at 160 pounds, while sophomore Julian Medina will compete at heavyweight as a 16th-seed.

The action will kick off at PIscataway High School with the preliminary round on Friday at 5 p.m, with pre-quarterfinals  starting immediately afterwards. Saturday's competition will being at 10 a.m. with the quarterfinals, which will be followed soon after by the semifinals, consolation quarterfinals and consolation semifinals. The bouts for third and fifth place are tabbed for 3:30 pm on Saturday, while the finals will begin at 6p.m.
