GMC graduate promoted to brigadier general

MILLEDGEVILLE — A Georgia Military College student has been promoted to brigadier general of the Georgia National Guard.

Brig. Gen. Reginald G.A. Neal, director of the joint staff, Georgia National Guard, earned a promotion from colonel to brigadier general, according to a press release.

On Jan. 7, Gen. Joseph Lengyel, chief of the National Guard Bureau, joined the soldiers and airmen of the Georgia National Guard at the Clay National Guard Center to observe the promotion.

Neal received the Defense Superior Service Medal from Lengyel for his performance during the past year as the executive assistant for Lengyel, and was then promoted to the rank of brigadier general, according to the press release.

In 2015, then-Col. Neal assumed command of the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, as the first African-American commander. In 2016, Neal was selected to serve as the executive assistant. Last fall, Neal returned to Georgia and upon his promotion assumed duties as the director of the joint staff for the Georgia National Guard.

As a graduate from Georgia Military College, Neal said his education at GMC was a critical stepping stone to establish the foundation for the achievements in his career.

"Attending GMC was a pivotal point in my life,” Neal said. “Georgia Military College established the fundamentals which prepared me to excel in my career and future educational endeavors. When I graduated from GMC, I was equipped to meet any challenge I faced."
