The J.P. Stevens High School boys basketball team won its biggest game in over a decade on Thursday night. 

J.P. Stevens defeated St. Joseph (Met.) 49-42 in overtime, which marked the first time in 11 years that the Hawks had taken down the perennial Greater Middlesex Conference powerhouse. 

Senior Solomon Smith led J.P. Stevens with 22 points, and is leading the team with an average of 16.4 points per game so far this season. Kasi Hazzard scored 10 points and Naysean Burch, who is averaging over 14 points per game, added nine points.

K-Shawn Schulters led St. Joseph with 11 points. Luke Fresco scored 10 points and Tyree Taganeca-Ford chipped in nine points. 

J.P. Stevens improved to 7-0 with Thursday's victory, and is currently tied for first in the GMC Red Division at 4-0 with Old Bridge. The Hawks will travel to Old Bridge in a battle of the division unbeatens on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Dunellen's Kelton reaches milestone

Dunellen junior Tyje Kelton reached the 1,000 point milestone with a 29-point performance against Middlesex on Dec. 26. 

The junior is averaging 20.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, four assists and 3.9 steals per game for the 6-1 Destroyers so far this season. 

J.F. Kennedy snaps skid

J.F. Kennedy snapped a 29-game losing streak with a 59-52 victory over Woodbridge on Dec. 27. The last time the Mustangs won a game was Feb. 16, 2017 when they defeated Bishop Ahr 63-49. 

TOP 10

1. J.P. Stevens (7-0): J.P. Stevens made a strong case as the team to beat with a overtime victory against St. Joseph (Met.) on Thursday night. It was the first time in 11 years that the Hawks had beaten St. Joseph. J.P. Stevens will host Ridge on Saturday before traveling to GMC Red Division rival Old Bridge on Tuesday. 

2. Old Bridge (6-1): Old Bridge opened the season on a five-game win streak before falling to Matawan in overtime on Dec. 29. The Knights bounced back with a win over East Brunswick to remain undefeated in the GMC Red Division (along with J.P. Stevens) at 4-0. Old Bridge will host Woodbridge on Monday before a division-deciding matchup against J.P. Stevens on Tuesday.

3. Colonia (6-0): Colonia is picking up right where it left off last season. With a new coach and a talented group of players, the Patriots, who are averaging 56 points per game so far, are in tournament shape just weeks into the season. Colonia is undefeated in the GMC White Division at 3-0 (along with New Brunswick) will look to keep the streak going against Woodbridge on Saturday and Sayreville on Tuesday.

4. Bishop Ahr (6-2): Bishop Ahr started the season at 4-0 before running into J.P. Stevens on Dec. 22. The Trojans have gone 2-1 in their last three games and are currently undefeated at 3-0 in the GMC Blue Division. Bishop Ahr will look to keep winning against South Plainfield on Monday and Carteret on Wednesday. 

5. Linden (6-2): Linden had a five-game win streak snapped with a loss to Roselle Catholic on Thursday. The Tigers will look to get back on track against Haddonfield on Saturday before facing Union County Conference foes Scotch Plains-Fanwood and the Patrick School. 

6. Piscataway (3-4): Piscataway has struggled to find a groove early this season, with tough losses against Linden and Elizabeth, but a big win over Red Division rival St. Joseph (Met.). The Chiefs will look to extend its win streak to three games on Saturday when they travel to Barringer. 

7. St. Joseph (4-3): The preseason No. 1 has set itself up with a tough schedule early in the season, and it hasn't slowed the Falcons down too much. St. Joseph's losses have come at the hands of Piscataway, Seton Hall Prep and J.P. Stevens, with both of those games going to overtime. St. Joseph faced undefeated St. Benedict's on Friday and will host Perth Amboy on Tuesday.

8. Rahway (6-0): Rahway is currently atop the Union County Conference Valley Division at 2-0, and is coming off a three-point win over Carteret on Thursday. The Indians are averaging 55 points a game so far this season, and will look to keep the win streak going against North Brunswick on Thursday.

9. Monroe (5-2): Coming off a seven-win season last year, Monroe is on pace to surpass that in the next week or so. The Falcons have won four in a row and is averaging close to 70 points per game during the streak. Monroe has a tough stretch coming up, with Sayreville on Saturday, Piscataway on Tuesday and Old Bridge on Thursday.

10. East Brunswick (3-3): East Brunswick had a three-game win streak snapped at the hands of Old Bridge on Thursday. The Bears will look to get back on track against South Brunswick on Tuesday.

Other teams receiving consideration: Dunellen (6-1); New Brunswick (4-2); Carteret (3-4); Spotswood (3-3); Middlesex (4-1).
