If you’ve ever wondered whether the average heavy duty pickup could shlep – i.e. drag – a trailered elephant, the answer is an unequivocal “yes.”  In fact, General Motors Co.’s new GMC Sierra Heavy Duty has the chops to shlep two or three of them, assuming the pachyderms agree to avoid thrashing about in the trailer.

GM only was willing to say that the towing capacity of its new GMC Sierra HD, powered by a Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel and 10-speed Allison automatic transmission, is “well in excess of” 30,000 pounds, more details to come later. (That’s three medium-size elephants.) The engine’s power rating is 445 horsepower, while torque is an impressive 910 pound-feet.

Sierra HD joins a parade of new big and extra-powerful pickups from the Detroit Three for 2019-20.  Earlier this month Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. showed its new Ram HD; Sierra’s stablemate, Silverado HD will be shown next month.  Next week, Ford Motor Co. is taking the wraps off a bigger, stronger version of its entry in the class, F 250/350 Super Duty.

Based on the latest generation Silverado/Sierra full-size pickup architecture from GM, the new heavy duty features what it calls a “larger, commanding design that provides more room for cargo and occupants.”  But Sierra’s most resounding selling points relate to advanced trailering technology, which isn’t surprising given the number of well-heeled customers who will be buying the vehicle to tow extremely expensive boats, RVs, horse trailers and other toys -- though probably not pet elephants.

“Trailering is the most important consideration for Sierra Heavy Duty customers, and the new features and technologies in the 2020 Sierra HD make it easier than ever to hitch a trailer and tow it confidently,” said Jaclyn McQuaid, vehicle chief engineer, Heavy Duty Trucks. “We’ve developed this new truck to offer the greatest trailering experience ever offered by GMC.”

The 2020 Sierra HD can come equipped with as many as fifteen cameras as optional equipment, including what GM says is the industry’s first “transparent trailer” feature.  Using cameras mounted on the back of the vehicle and on the back of whatever trailer is being towed, the feature allows the driver to see the road behind the trailer as though the trailer was transparent.  Available technology would allow the driver to control heating or air conditioning in an RV, for example, while it is being towed.

GMC said its front seats are the roomiest in the class, with many premium materials and gadgets available, including the only heads-up display among heavy-duty trucks.  Buyers opting for the Denali package will receive an even higher grade of leather and other interior materials.

For off-road enthusiasts, the new Sierra HD comes in an AT4 (all terrain) variant with distinctive colors, chrome treatments and features such as off-road suspension, heavy-duty shock absorbers, skid plates, locking rear differential and hill descent control.

GMC said the truck will be available late this summer.  While pricing hasn’t been released, the current generation starts at around $35,000 with the price rising to $70,000 with all options and upgrades.
