Which is truck better? Is it a new Chevy Colorado ZR2 with a 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel, or is it a GMC Canyon All Terrain with the same engine/powertrain? We recently received this question at ask@tfltruck.com from Jesse G.
I’m curious if you would rather have a GMC Canyon All Terrain with the 2.8 Duramax or a Chevy Colorado ZR2 2.8 Duramax as a daily driver here in the Denver metro area? I love the idea of the ZR2 being able to tackle anything I could throw at it, but I’m not sure if giving up those mpg as a daily driver is worth the capability that I would use only a few times a year.
This is a very interesting question that indeed hinges on the tradeoff between fuel economy and off-road capability. Take a look at the EPA ratings for both truck that have the same “baby Duramax”.
The specialized ZR2 off-road package is rated at 3 MPG less combined, and 6 MPG less on the highway. It’s a combination of factors that include the unique front bumper design of the ZR2 that affects aerodynamics at highway speeds as well as engine cooling. The other challenge for the ZR2 are the Goodyear Duratrac tires that are very good off-road, but cause the truck top lose a bit more efficiency.
The softer off-road suspension of the ZR2 also decreases it’s overall towing capability from 7,600 lbs on the Canyon diesel to 5,000 lbs for the ZR2.
On the flip side, the ZR2 is much better suited for more challenging off-road trails. It has better approach/departure angles, rock sliders on the side, front and rear locking differentials, and uniquely tuned DSSV spool-valve shocks.
The ZR2 suspension offers a well-controlled ride on pavement, and a smooth ride off-road.
In the end, the choice is up to you. If you are weekend warrior who likes a quick adventure – then a truck like the GMC Canyon All-Terrain fits the bill. However, if your off-road skill level is high, you like a tougher challenge, or simply live in an area where off-road trucks and beefy tires are a necessity – then ZR2 is nearly unbeatable in the midsize segment.
The Colorado ZR2 is TFLtruck’s 2018 Gold Hitch – Truck of the Year.
