It may be freezing cold outside, but that has not stopped GMC Prep’s middle school boys basketball team from creating a hot streak inside the gymnasium.
The young Bulldogs are 8-0 in league play and have only one regular season matchup remaining before their league tournament begins as they look to earn the school’s first middle school boys championship. The outlook is pretty favorable at the moment because GMC Prep currently owns the top spot in the league.
Like many athletic success stories, the Bulldogs’ road to their unblemished league record began long before the season ever started. Many players consistently showed up to summer workouts, camps, and practices to put in the work necessary to be successful on the basketball court. Even if they do not come out on top at the end of the tournament, their hard work has already paid off as opponents know that seeing GMC Prep on their schedule means anything but an automatic win. The way the team has gelled together has produced two key overtime wins as well as the aforementioned outstanding record.
“I think that this group of young men are tremendous,” said GMC Prep middle school boys coach Dustin Archebelle. “I have been extremely blessed to be able to coach these young men and be a part of their lives, and also have them be a part of mine. Ever since I have started coaching the middle school team we have gotten better each year, winning more games and a couple of trophies along the way. I think that this year’s team has exactly what it takes to go all the way and bring home a championship for the school and our fans. The future is looking bright for GMC boys basketball.”
It’s easy to see how the Bulldogs came to be a top team this season with players like eighth-graders Keith Robbins and JaBari Dixon, each averaging around 20 points per game for Coach Archebelle. Point guard Alex French, also an eighth-grader, has actually earned the nickname “Coach French” for the way he runs the offense and leads the team on the floor. Classmate Chris Haynes had a reputation for the way he defends the basket, but has grown his game late in the season to be an offensive threat in the post as well. Those middle schoolers along with teammate and role player Davis Duke are all major reasons the GMC Prep boys have reached new heights for the program.
The Bulldogs will play their final regular season game at Tattnall Square Academy tomorrow night and the league tournament is slated to begin Saturday. But because of their outstanding record GMC Prep has already locked down a first round bye, so they will await their opponent in the next round which is scheduled to take place Monday. If the Bulldogs win that game, they will advance to the championship Thursday, Jan. 25.
