Standing out over a field of six total competitors, the 2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali took home Truck Trend’s coveted Pickup Truck of the Year award.
The GMC qualified for this test by nature of its all-new powerplant, a 6.6L Duramax turbodiesel V-8 with a best-in-class (and best-in-test) 445 hp and a stout 910 lb-ft of torque. Although the powertrain was available for the 2017 model year, we weren’t able to test one in last year’s roundup, so we invited the GMC to play in this test instead. Boy, are we glad we did.
We were immediately impressed by the GMC’s comfortable, luxurious interior, which beckoned us with acres of high-grade tan leather, quality materials, and GMC’s intuitive IntelliLink infotainment system. But once we turned the key, all thoughts of woodgrain trim and in-cabin Wi-Fi went away, replaced with awe at the truck’s forward thrust. Loaded or unloaded, the Duramax engine pushed the Sierra Denali through the air with authority. It was especially impressive when towing our test trailer loaded down to 10,000 pounds. Hitched up, the Denali had no trouble climbing the grade on our test loop, with plenty of power in reserve and a well-executed exhaust brake for the ride back down.
The GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali only won the Pickup Truck of the Year Award after competing in a five-day battle for glory against our other contenders. Each truck was subjected to instrumented track testing, including 0-60 mph and quarter-mile acceleration tests, as well as a subjective handling test both unloaded and with payload. The crew then focused on towing, hitching each truck to a weighted trailer and sending it up and down the Cajon Pass. A long-distance fuel economy test followed, then two days off-roading in the California desert.
The Sierra Denali took home five of the seven evaluation categories, a performance heretofore unheard of among HD pickups. As such, it earned its Pickup Truck of the Year status without breaking a sweat.
Congratulations to the teams behind the Sierra Denali HD’s comfortable interior, excellent chassis tuning, and stout Duramax V-8. The whole package adds up to a very impressive truck indeed.
