The South River High School football team clinched the Greater Middlesex Conference Blue Division championship and concluded its first undefeated regular season in 17 years with a 50-38 comeback victory over Dunellen at Columbia Park on Friday night.
The Division title was South River’s first since 2013.
Dunellen, which entered the game needing a victory to clinch a North 2 Group I playoff berth, led 38-36 at halftime following a wild 24 minutes of action. Dunellen was outscored 14-0 in the second half.
Quarterback Michael DeSantis passed for 281 yards and four touchdowns for the Rams, who entered this weekend’s action with the second most power points in Central Group II. DeSantis also had touchdown runs of 54 and 27 yards.
Travis Thomas had touchdown receptions of 7 and 30 yards for the Rams. South River’s Kyle Baszak had a 14-yard scoring jaunt and a 6-yard touchdown catch. March Pacehco caught a 30-yard scoring strike from DeSantis.
Dunellen quarterback Mike Harmon, the reigning Borden’s Baller of the Week, finished with 258 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Backfield mate Joe Olsommer had 88 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.
Olsommer scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards. Harmon found the end zone on runs of 8 and 2 yards. Harmon had an 85-yard kickoff return for a score. Harmon also completed a 14-yard pass to Olsommer.
The Destroyers, who fell to 3-5, will play a consolation game against an opponent to be determined before playing at Middlesex on Thanksgiving eve.
