For ill-treating patients, GMC suspends nurse

Panaji: A cardiac department nurse at Goa Medical College (GMC) and hospital was suspended on Monday for allegedly shouting at patients and failing to arrange for clean linen in the ward. A showcause notice was also issued to the matron.

The order suspending nurse Yogita Naik was issued by dean GMC Pradeep Naik. The suspension order says, it is contemplated to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Naik. During the period of suspension, Naik has been asked to report to the medical superintendent's office and not to leave the headquarters without obtaining the dean's permission.

Health minister Vishwajit Rane said he had received a complaint that the nurse had shouted at patients.

She did not ensure that mackintosh and linen were changed, despite the hospital having enough stock, he said.

"You can't shout at patients and get away with it. I probed the matter on receiving the complaint. I will be focusing on GMC," he said.

After taking over as health minister, Rane has placed several allegedly erring staff in health department, craftsmen training department and women and child development department under suspension.

Rane has also paid surprise visits to primary health centres and community health centres. A few days ago, he visited the district health hospital, Mapusa, to check its functioning. After taking charge, the health minister had sounded a warning that he would not tolerate inefficiency in work.
