Wrestling: Monroe deals No. 20 South Plainfield first GMC loss since 2008 - nj.com

Monroe did the impossible Wednesday night, at the very least the nearly impossible.

Monroe won the final three bouts -- at 145, 152 and 160 pounds -- and handed No. 20 South Plainfield a 33-28 defeat snapping its 12-year undefeated streak against the Greater Middlesex Conference.

It will also end South Plainfield’s run of eight-consecutive divisional championships. South Plainfield had won GMC divisional titles in 11 of the last 12 seasons.

South Plainfield’s last lost within the GMC was to Perth Amboy in 2008.

Monroe has won 10-straight dual meets since starting the season 2-3. It’s last loss was to Phillipsburg, 48-18, on Jan. 4.

The match started at 160 pounds.

Anthony White gave South Plainfield (13-4) a 28-21 lead when he scored a 51-second pin at 138 pounds.

Wrestling in its own gym, Monroe sent its fans home happy with an epic comeback.

Sophomore Anthony Profaci trigger the rally when he gutted out a 14-12 win over South Plainfield’s Xavier Santos and cut the Tiger lead to 28-24.

Ian McCable followed with a 44-second fall at 152 that gave Monroe its first lead, 30-28, since the sixth bout of the match.

With the outcome riding on the outcome of the 160-pound bout, Chris Fanelli recorded a 6-3 victory over Daniel Borsos to give Monroe a memorable win.

Monroe outpinned South Plainfield, 3-2. However, the difference for the Falcons was two, one-point victories. At 182, Justin Cholula-Conde squeaked out a 1-0 win over Kennth Clevenger. Then, at 113, Nick Stump outpointed Julian Irizarry, 13-12.

After a split of the first four bouts, Monroe took a 15-9 on a fall by heavyweight Jack Richards.

The lead evaporated quickly when South Plainfield won three of the next four bouts. Major decisions by J.J. Giordano (106), Jacob DelVecchio (120) and Andrew Loniewski (126) gave South Plainfield a 22-15 lead.

Joseph Fiordaliso added a 13-6 decision at 138 or Monroe.
