Cadillac dealer gave $1,500 for local veterans' 'Christmas baskets'
For the second year in a row, a local Cadillac dealership has given a substantial contribution to the cause of helping Midland County veterans and their families stay fed through the holiday season.
Betten Baker Buick GMC Cadillac Midland donated $1,500 to the American Legion Post 165 in Midland to help pay for groceries for the group's "Christmas basket" program. Also called "sustainment baskets," the program has been assisting the families of Midland County veterans since the late 1970s, said Ross Ahlich, Midland County Veteran Affairs director.
"The American Legion in Midland County started delivering Christmas baskets to veterans, or widow of veterans, to help alleviate some of the costs during Christmas time," Ahlich said.
Ahlich thanked Betten Baker for its donation in a press release on Thursday, as well as for continuing to employ local veterans and their family members.
Ahlich also thanked the Midland High Graduating Reunion Classes of 1964, 1965, 1966 and 1967, organized by Nels Cronkright — Midland American Legion 2nd vice commander and American Legion state baseball director — which altogether raised about $800 for the cause.
Thanks to the donations, more than 35 veterans and their families received Christmas baskets this season.
