North Hunterdon wins Boresch
The plan was to weather Kingsway’s storm in the middleweights. Then, North Hunterdon hoped to seize control with the bigger guys in the Boresch Duals finals at host Newton High School.
After the first five matches which started at 138, North Hunterdon led 10-9.
“We hit our upper weights and the guys knew it was their time,” Lions coach Chris Hrunka said. “Their time to go out and get wins and go for those pins. We were fortunate that we got them. Every kid kind of fed off the next.”
It started with Nate Fosset getting a stunning 12-second pin at 182.
“That just steamrolled right through the next three weights,” Hrunka said. “They just went after them and from there the wind was kind of out of Kingsway’s sails a little bit.”
Alex Uryniak (195), Ian Gaburo (220) and Liam Akers (285) all pinned to open a 34-9 lead against Kingsway, the defending Group IV champions. At 106, Logan Wadle clinched the win with a 7-3 win. In all, the Lions won eight straight matches from 152 to 106.
The 15th annual event typically features state-ranked powers. In the latest New Jersey Writers Association Top 20, Kingsway is ranked No. 5 and North Hunterdon is No. 7.
In the semifinals, North Hunterdon defeated No. 6 Paulsboro 39-29. In the quarterfinals, the Lions beat Caldwell 68-4.
What's scary for opponents is that North Hunterdon is still improving.
“We haven’t put together 14 really good performances across the board yet,” Hrunka said. “You know, that will happen. It’s just not quite there yet, but that’s a good thing. It’s good to leave a match where you win by 15, 20 points and think, ‘Hey, guess what, like we could do a little bit better than that.’ That’s a good place to be in. … We’re happy with the win, but there’s work to be done. We told the kids be happy tonight, but Monday we go back to work and we got a long season ahead of us.”

Hoerle wins at Sam Cali; Watchung Hils performs well
Westfield’s Luke Hoerle continued his impressive start with a victory at the prestigious Sam Cali Tournament. The senior won the 126-pound title with a 6-2 win over St. Peter’s Sean Rendeiro in the final.
Westfield and Watchung Hills tied for seventh in the 41-team tournament at Fairleigh Dickinson-Madison.
Watchung Hills had a pair of third-place finishers in Nico Calello (106) and Blake Bahna (160), while Jake Bash (145) took sixth.
Westfield’s Ethan Composto (106) reached the final eight and Quinn Gimblette (120), Anthony Ciotta (152), Luke Scanlan (170), Jack Price (195) and Will Ricca (285) reached the round of 12.
Hoerle took a 6-2 lead into the third period via two takedowns and a reversal. Rendeiro rode out Hoerle in the final two minutes, but couldn't turn him for any points. In the semifinals, Hoerle defeated Middletown North's Thomas O`Keefe 6-2.
Both are high-level wins. In fact, last season all three wrestlers reached the fourth round of wrestlebacks in the state tournament — Hoerle at 120, O'Keefe at 113 and Rendeiro at 126.
In December, Hoerle captured titles at the Wendy Pandy-Leh Wrestling Invitational and at the Anthony Casselli Invitational.

Metuchen places second in Pioneer Classic
Metuchen placed second in the 14-team Pioneer Classic at New Providence, where Jaedon Kearns (113), Francesco Rossiter (126), Tyler Haynes (138) and Koby Williams (160) all reached the finals of their respective weight classes for the Bulldogs.
As the lone Greater Middlesex Conference representative in the field, Metuchen amassed 147 points, finishing 55.5 behind team champion River Dell.
Jack McGowan (132) and Joshua Mateos (285) won third-place bouts for the Bulldogs, while teammates Brandon Kick (145) and Jake Lapinski (152) finished fourth.

Poznanski named OW at Minuteman Classic; Plainfield's Casey wins
Three pins in a combined 91 seconds. Colonia’s John Poznanski dominated on the way to capturing his second-straight Minuteman Classic title and earned his second Outstanding Wrestler award. The senior, who is ranked No. 3 in the country at 182 by InterMat, earned a 23-second fall in the final at Elizabeth High School.
Plainfield’s Ki`zuran Casey (170) also captured a title with a 5-2 win over Wall’s Brendan Newbury in the championship. The Cardinals took ninth in the 15-team tournament. Tylik Epps (132) placed second, while Steven Gordon (285) took fifth and Deyvi Menjivar (138), Eaton Brown (145) each placed in sixth.,
Colonia’s Michael Torres (160) placed third and Masino Rivituso (195) took fifth.
Woodbridge was led by John Kubis-Badilla’s third-place finish at 145. Other placers included Anthony Zecchino (126) and Tyler Job (160) in fourth, Alexis Irizarry (120) in fifth and Jason Tran (113) and Stephen Daramola (285) in sixth.

South Plainfield shows fire at Duals
Steve Johnston wanted to see that fight, a spark, after South Plainfield lost to Toms River North 45-9 in the morning quarterfinals of the prestigious Henry Boresch Duals at Newton High School.
The fourth-seeded Tigers responded with wins over Newton and Caldwell to take fifth in the eight-team duals.
“You want to see the fire in the guys’ eyes,” said Johnston, in his second season as Tigers head coach. “That lets you know that, hey, they’re not happy with the result from Toms River. We want to go out there and scrap for every point and make sure we finish the day 2-1 instead of 1-2 or 0-3.”
South Plainfield defeated No. 8 Newton 40-27 in the wrestlebacks semifinals and No. 7 Caldwell 42-30 in the fifth-place match. In that win, South Plainfield had seven pins – J.J. Giordano (106), Jacob DelVecchio (120), Andrew Loniewski (126), Anthony White (132), Tyler Balent (138), Xavier Santos (152) and Julian Medina (220).
“I’m just glad our guys were able to bounce back,” Johnston said. “One of two things they could have done – they could have put their heads down after they lost to Toms River North and just whatever happened, happened. But they battled. Newton’s a program that’s up on the rise … and then that might be the best Caldwell team that we’ve seen in a while.”
South Plainfield, which was missing a couple starters, host J.P. Stevens on Wednesday and then compete Friday and Saturday at the Virginia Duals, another stacked event.
“The reason why we go to the Boresch Duals and the Virginia Duals, it prepares us for our ultimate goal – to win that state title,” Johnston said. “Anytime you can get three matches in a day where you’re constantly battling, getting your kids in there getting used to fighting for every single point, that’s the goal. We want to try and scrap for every point. We’re going to do that.”
