NJ Girls basketball: 2019-20 Home News Tribune GMC preseason Top 10 - My Central Jersey

(last season’s record in parenthesis)

1. St. Thomas Aquinas (25-4) – The GMC White Division champion Trojans grabbed their first Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament championship in 18 years and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Non-Public A South Tournament before falling to powerhouse St. John Vianney. The squad formerly known as Bishop Ahr returns its entire starting lineup and is expected to pick up where it left off.

2. Edison (20-7) – The Eagles advanced to the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament final, falling to Bishop Ahr, before losing to Westfield in the quarterfinals of the North 2 Group IV Tournament. Edison did lose some big names to graduation, including Samira Sargent, but should remain contenders in the county and conference.

3. J.P. Stevens (18-7) – The Hawks won the GMC Red Division title and went to the semifinals of the GMC Tournament. But No. 4 seed J.P. Stevens was shocked in the first round of the North 2 Group IV Tournament by 13th-seeded North Hunterdon.

4. Piscataway (12-12) – The Chiefs went to the quarterfinals of the GMC Tournament, before falling as the No. 10 seed in the North 2 Group IV Tournament to seventh-seeded Somerset County power Watchung Hills. Piscataway took some graduation and transfer hits.

5. East Brunswick (18-9) – The Bears ran into eventual champion Bishop Ahr in the quarterfinals of the GMC Tournament, falling in the same round of the Central Group IV Tournament after a first-round win. East Brunswick was hit pretty hard by graduation.

6. Sayreville (17-10) – The Bombers were seeded sixth in the GMC Tournament, but were toppled by No. 11 Old Bridge in the first round. Sayreville then fell into the second round of the Central Group IV Tournament, succumbing to eventual champ Middletown South. Sayreville lost some key names to graduation, but also return enough talent to be in the mix again.

7. Monroe (13-11) – The Falcons went to the quarterfinals of the GMC Tournament, before falling in the opening round of the Central Group IV tourney. Monroe returns relatively intact and should continue to move the program in the right direction.

8. Old Bridge (10-13) – The Knights made a surprising run to the GMC Tournament quarterfinals, but didn’t qualify for the state tournament. Now they’ll look to parlay that success into a strong start, especially with only one player lost to graduation and a returning group led by 1,000-point scorer Rachel Kuhl.

9. Middlesex (25-5) – The GMC Blue Division champion Blue Jays made the GMCT semifinals and went all the way to the Central Group I final before succumbing to eventual Group I finalist Bound Brook. Graduation hit Middlesex pretty hard, so it remains to be seen how the Jays match up outside their division.

10. South River (18-9) – The Rams enjoyed an inspired stretch run to their regular season, taking second in the GMC Blue Division, but couldn’t get past Newark Collegiate in the opening round of the Central Group II Tournament. South River returns its starting 5.
