In the United States, GMC Sierra deliveries totaled 66,198 units in Q3 2019, an increase of about 29 percent compared to 51,368 units sold in Q3 2018.In the first nine months of the year, Sierra sales increased about 7 percent to 163,601 units.

Competitive Sales Comparison
Third quarter 2019 GMC Sierra sales keep the full-size pickup truck in fourth place in its competitive set by overall sales volume. The Sierra trailed the Ford F-Series (see Ford F-series sales) in first place (by a wide margin of over 145,000 units), the Ram Pickup (see Ram Pickup sales) in second place, and its own corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Silverado (see Chevy Silverado sales) – in third place. The Sierra continued to outsell all other segment contenders, including the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan.

However, the Sierra’s 29 percent jump in sales volume allowed it to outperform the segment and all other contenders. Big Red’s pickup saw segment share rise ever so slightly during the quarter, increasing from 9 to 10 percent, compared to the segment-leading 34 percent commanded by the F-Series, 25 percent by the Ram Pickup, and 24 percent by the Silverado. The Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan held 5 and 1 percent segment shares, respectively.
The full-size pickup truck segment expanded an average of 5.9 percent to 636,442 units in Q3 2019.

The GM Authority Take
GMC Sierra sales rebounded during the third quarter of 2019, delivering a rather stellar performance. We attribute the jump to significantly improved availability of the Sierra 1500 (light duty) and an increased interest in the all-new Sierra HD models, which only began to trickle into dealer lots by the end of the quarter.
We should also note that GMC offered some appealing Sierra incentives during the third quarter. In fact, GMC Sierra discounts in Q3 2019 included 20 percent off in September as well as 13 percent off the outgoing (last-generation) HD models in August 2019.
We expect the GMC Sierra to hit its stride from a sales volume standpoint in the first quarter of 2020, as a result of full availability of half-ton models and improved availability of the new Heavy Duty models. We initially expected this to be the case for the fourth quarter of 2019, but the UAW strike – which lasted over a month – will have a negative impact on Sierra sales volumes during the Q4 2019 timeframe.
