General Motors will reveal the all-new 2021 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL at a media event on January 14th in Vail, Colorado, GM Authority has learned.
The all-new model will represent a complete overhaul of the popular Yukon nameplate, delivering an all-new exterior and interior, along with engineering, among other things. The all-new vehicle will represent the fifth generation of the Yukon nameplate, which has consistently been the second best-selling nameplate in its segment after the first place Tahoe/Suburban duo.
In that regard, the 2021 GMC Yukon are expected to be very similar to Chevrolet’s 2021 Tahoe and 2021 Suburban revealed last week, although with GMC styling cues.
We spied the new Yukon undergoing testing in SLT and range-topping Denali trim levels just last week in body-hugging checkered camo, showing the full-size SUVs in greater detail than we’ve seen previously.
Some of the hallmark features of the all-new 2021 GMC Yukon will be a bigger size with more space for both passengers and cargo. There’s also the introduction of the independent rear suspension, which delivers significant improvements in the ride and handling of the vehicles, particularly over bumpy and uneven road surfaces. Due to their larger size and independent suspension, the new Yukon and Yukon XL are expected to be heavier than the outgoing models. It’s currently unclear what kind of impact the independent rear suspension will have on towing capacity.
One of the more hotly-anticipated things about the 2021 GMC Yukon lineup is the Yukon AT4 model, a new off-road-oriented trim that is expected to be analogous to the Z71 trim level of the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban. The Z71 models on the Chevy utilities feature a unique front fascia that improves the approach angle, a front skid plate, red tow hooks and 20-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires. The optional Air Ride Adaptive Suspension delivers automatic load-leveling and ride-height adjustment of up to 4 inches (101 mm). In highway driving, the system automatically lowers the ride height ¾-inch (19 mm) to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, while a driver-selectable position lowers the suspension 2 inches (51 mm) to aid passenger entry and exit when the vehicle is parked. Drivers can also raise the body for additional ground clearance when driving off-road by 1 inch (25 mm) at low speeds, and an additional 1 inch (25 mm) at even lower speeds. We expect all of these features to make their way to the upcoming GMC Yukon AT4. For its part, GMC has previously announced that it will offer an AT4 variant of all its models by 2021, with the exception of the GMC Savana van.
