Ostensibly the fancier of GM’s two mid-size pickup truck offerings, the GMC Canyon is getting a little long in the tooth for the 2019 model year. What was once a first-place finisher in Cars.com’s mid-size pickup comparison test in 2016, narrowly beating the then-new Honda Ridgeline, came in last place in our comparison this year — losing not only to the Ridgeline, but also the Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator.

Not all is bad down in the Canyon, however. Our judges found its braking distances among the best in our comparison, it was among the quickest from 0-60 mph, and its towing specs were also toward the higher end of our competitors.
None of that was able to make up for its shortcomings versus rivals, however. Those included an outdated and non-premium interior that was particularly damning for what was a top-of-the-line Canyon Denali, as well as transmission performance and brake feel that were so glaringly poor, the Canyon seemed to perform well in our measured tests in spite of itself.
The Canyon had its last redesign for the 2015 model year and is likely due for another one sooner rather than later now that GM has sorted out its latest iterations of its full-size pickups. That may not make it an attractive candidate compared to all the new entrants in the mid-size pickup class, but it could lead to some quality bargains as dealers prepare for the next generation.
