He ran for points, caught for points and even kicked for some when Alejandro Santiago was stopped temporarily from doing those first two things to reach the end zone.
The sturdy (6-1, 225) and versatile senior rushed for four touchdowns, caught a short pass from freshman Jayden Young for one and he kicked a 27-yard field goal Saturday to power St. Thomas Aquinas to a 38-14 win over Metuchen in their Gold Division battle in Metuchen.
In the end, Santiago directly accounted for 36 of the 38 points.
That bounty helped the young Trojans (who start as many as five freshmen) rebound from a 49-0 loss last week to No. 9 Hillside for their third victory in four games. St. Thomas and Metuchen are both 3-4 now.
Santiago ran the ball 26 times for 159 yards to pace a ground attack that also featured freshman Joel Marellis with 101 yards on five attempts. Saniago also recorded a team-high nine tackles at linebacker.
Old Bridge finds a new way to win: In a season filled so far with white-knuckle finishes, Old Bridge topped all its previous comebacks and late-game clinchers Friday night when senior Andrew Vera kicked a 25-yard field goal as time expired to give the Knights a 25-23 victory over Sayreville and move them to 6-0 this season.
Sayreville (2-4) appeared to be the team cobbling together a dramatic win when Jayvis Rayside scored on a 1-yard run with just over seven minutes to go for a one-point lead. But Old Bridge conducted a 68-yard drive behind sophomore QB Owen Haughney to set up the game-winning boot by Vera. In last week’s battle with Monroe, it was a blocked PAT that secured a 7-6 victory for the Knights.
Haughney was outstanding in this game, completing 12 of 28 for 241 yards and three touchdowns, one each to Eddie Nugent, Sergino Donou and Bryson Corbett.
A frosh shines light for Edison: Freshman quarterback Matt Yascko turned in a senior-like performance Friday by completing 16 of 32 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns to help the Eagles (3-4) snap a losing streak that would have been five games if not for a forfeit victory awarded against New Brunswick.
This was the third start for Yascko, who became Edison’s surprise engineer when senior Lucas Loffredo was injured late late in the game of a Sept. 27 loss to North Brunswick, and wound up transferring to Piscataway the following week. Yascko, incidentally, is the son of the longtime Carteret head football coach by the same name.
Yascko used five receivers to amass his 237 yards, among them senior Tyee Martin, who had six receptions for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Jaime Smith-Velez caught two passes for 40 yards and a TD.
Barrons spurred by another Lee spree: Junior running back Ali Lee turned in his seventh consecutive multi-touchdown game by rushing for two Friday to spark a 22-7 win over Perth Amboy. That streak began last year when Lee scored three times in Woodbridge’s 54-19 win over Orange in a state consolation game. The elusive Lee began this season with three TDs in a 28-12 win over St. Joseph (Met.), and Friday’s total gives him 17 in six games for the undefeated Barrons.
While Lee’s running exploits have somewhat overshadowed the play of the Woodbridge defense, its effort should not go without mention. Jess Cabrera, Isaiah Allen, Justin Magera, Stephen Daramola and Jordan Harris anchor a group that has allowed just 13 points over the last three games and 37 all season.
Middlesex moxy: After showing its tremendous skill-position depth to overcome injuries in recent weeks, Middlesex (7-0) displayed its depth of character Friday by rallying to defeat Johnson, 10-7, in a cross-conference battle in Middlesex.
Senior Alex Roque emerged as the face of the Blue Jays’ most thrilling win by far this season, but there were many other hands involved in its shaping. No opponent in the previous six wins had finished within 24 points of Middlesex, which did so despite injuries to starting QB Josh Ramirez and rushing star Max George.
Roque scored on a 48-yard run with about 3:00 to play, and he intercepted a pass two minutes later to seal the rally over a Johnson team that had won two straight. Mark Geist, Daemon Macarone, Jordan Campbell and Anthony Helmstetter all excelled defensively for Middlesex. Josue Hernandez-Paiz kicked a second-quarter field goal for the Blue Jays.
A Rose by any other name is a Hart: Dunellen was looking for a big offensive lift against Spotswood Friday, and got exactly that from a usual source, junior wingback Qwentin Rose, and also a less-heralded standout, senior receiver Andre Hart.
Rose scored on three long touchdown runs, including one of 63 yards, and Hart scored on a 65-yard run and an 84-yard kick return to send the Destroyers to a 34-13 victory. Rose now has 10 touchdowns this season for 2-4 Dunellen, while Hart has scored four. He also had two earlier this season in a win over Highland Park.
Piscataway pop: After struggling through three largely stagnant weeks offensively, Piscataway erupted for its biggest output this season, and against a rather unlikely source. Senior Khristian Hernandez struck for a career-high three touchdowns (albeit one on an interception) to direct the Chiefs (5-2) to a 41-14 victory over South Brunswick Friday in South Brunswick. Piscataway entered with a two-game losing streak (actually, three games, but a forfeit win was awarded against New Brunswick), while South Brunswick (4-3) had won four of its last five.
Hernandez carried 15 times for 101 yards and he also caught a 22-yard pass from his twin brother, Kristopher, who was a perfect 9 for 9 passing for 160 yards and a TD, a 21-yard pass to Marcel Walker. Christian White carried 13 times for 77 yards, and Rocco Bellamy and Marcus Petite each ran for a TD as Piscataway revived a ground attack that seemed out of gear in recent weeks.
St. Joseph gets its shutout: A much-improved St. Joseph defense came close to pitching a shutout against both Colonia and South Plainfield in recent weeks, but yielded one touchdown to each. The Falcons (6-1) finally did earn that goose egg trophy Friday with a 23-0 victory over Carteret for their sixth consecutive win. Tommy Romond, Gianni Principato, Gabriel Suero-Diaz, Eric Amponsah, Martin Green, Tyree Ford and Kyle Kaminski anchored the defense.
The final score suggests that St. Joseph could have been a bit more forgiving on defense and still earned the victory, but stubborn Carteret forced the Falcons into a sustained high gear with its own rugged play in the early going. St. Joseph ended the half with only a 3-0 lead provided by Chris Moyer on a 27-yard field goal. Ford, K-Shawn Schulters and Jordan Kinsler would each score a TD in the second half.
