GMC Weekend Blitz: North Brunswick dazzles on both sides and more from Week 4 - NJ.com

Myles Bailey was North Brunswick’s all-time rushing leader before his junior season was even completed, and the school’s all-time scorer by the second game of this season.

In other words, the speedy senior is used to operating in front of the bright spotlight.

As much as Bailey relishes his role as the team’s marquee scoring spark, he showed on Friday night that he is also perfectly pleased to share that glare.

That doesn’t happen a whole lot, though did Friday as both Demi Jenkins and Jaiquil Boyd returned interceptions for touchdowns in the Raiders’ 33-8 victory over New Brunswick. That was the third straight win for North Brunswick (4-1), No. 15 in the NJ.com Top 20.

“Our defense was great; they shut it down,” Bailey said. “I told them, ‘I want the ball back. Get me the ball back and I’ll score,’ but they did some scoring, too. We needed that.”

Bailey rushed for a game-high 187 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns to raise his season count to seven. But it just may have been Jenkins’ 65-yard pick six that changed the complexion of the game for good.

Bailey opened a 7-0 lead (after Justin Batts’ PAT) when he scored on a 33-yard run with 1:35 to play in the first half. Just two plays later, Jenkins, a senior cornerback, made his interception and bolted the other way for a 13-0 advantage.

“That play by Jenkins really set the tone,” North Brunswick head coach Michael Cipot said. "If they score there, it’s a tie game and they’re going into the half. That play maybe took the wind out a little.”

Boyd’s pick six was far less crucial than the one by Jenkins, but just as exciting. With his Raiders already in front, 26-8, Boyd snared the pass at North Brunswick’s 16 and broke for the right sideline on his way to an 84-yard return with 3:42 left in the game. Game story | Photo gallery

St. Joseph continues to stymie ranked teams: St. Joseph posted its first victory over a Top 20 team last year when it defeated No. 18 Westfield. Not bad at all for a program that only began competing at the varsity level in 2011.

Well, the Falcons suddenly are making Top 20 disruption a regular part of their weekends. They stunned No. 17 Piscataway, 15-14, Saturday in the schools’ first meeting, and that came just three weeks after a 22-20 win over No. 15 North Brunswick.

Tyree Ford scored on a 7-yard run with 50 seconds remaining and Chris Moyer added the PAT to give St. Joseph (4-1) a 15-8 lead, but Piscataway answered back in ultra-dramatic fashion. The Chiefs pulled to within one point when Tahj Bean hauled in a tipped 24-yard pass by Khristian Hernandez as time expired, and then Piscataway elected to go for two and the victory. The conversion run attempt was stopped by K-Shawn Schulters and Gabriel Suero Diaz as the Metuchen school celebrated what head coach Rich Hilliard called the ‘biggest win in school history.'’ Along with Schulters and Suero Diaz, the Falcons’ defense was anchored by Ford, Martin Green and Tommy Romond.

Old Bridge off to best start in 15 years: Balance has been the theme this season for Old Bridge (4-0), which is off to its best start since 2005 when it finished 7-3. That script was played out again Friday when Rhyne Smith rushed for two touchdowns, Owen Haughney and Davion Fields each carried for one, and Bryson Corbett capped off the game with a thrilling 43-yard interception return for a score in the Knights’ 36-22 win over South Brunswick to claim the Red Division title. In a series played every year since 2000, including three times in the playoffs, South Brunswick still leads 14-9, but the Knights snapped a three-game skid with the win.

Croteau and Colonia roll on: The Matt Croteau train continued to roll for Colonia (3-2) as he rushed for four touchdowns Friday in the Patriots’ 27-12 road win over South Plainfield. Colonia has won three straight games behind the recurring theme of Croteau charging into the end zone with the football in his hands. The senior has produced 10 TD runs in those three straight wins and he has 11 on the season. Colonia is now 22-6-2 all-time vs. South Plainfield and has won 11 straight.
