The Original GMC Yukon Influenced America's SUV Affection - RoadandTrack.com

The GMC Jimmy was a solid mid-size SUV, but a lack of overall refinement meant it could never substitute itself in as a daily driver in most people's lives. The Jimmy's replacement, the Yukon, was developed to do just that.

When the Yukon arrived in 1992, it was designed to appeal to those who wanted a big, capable off-roader that could double as a car that could pull off the daily grind. Softened lines and a modern interior meant it appealed to more people, while more sophisticated suspension in place of the live axles meant a more civilized ride on the road.

MotorWeek got ahold of the Yukon back when it was new to put it through its paces, finding it just as capable on the road as it was off it. Thanks to a V-8 with 300 lb-ft of torque, it could get from 0-60 in less than 10 seconds, then go and crawl through deep mud puddles without issue.

If you ever wonder why Americans love SUVs so much, the original Yukon is partially to blame. It was proof you can have a capable off-roader with plenty of space as your only car.
