Football: St. Thomas Aquinas seeks light in GMC Game of the Week vs. Dunellen - NJ.com

GREATER MIDDLESEX CONFERENCE FAN-VOTE GAME OF THE WEEK

St. Thomas Aquinas (0-3) at Dunellen (1-1), Friday, 7 p.m.

On the line: St. Thomas Aquinas (formerly known as Bishop Ahr) hopes to snap a seven-game losing streak, while Dunellen’s plan is to stay in the hunt for the Gold Division title with a victory. Dunellen evened its Gold record with a 42-0 win over Highland Park last week; St. Thomas Aquinas is 0-2 in the division.

Last meeting: As Bishop Ahr last year, the Trojans rallied in the third quarter to top Dunellen, 14-8. Then-senior Jalen Brooks delivered the blow with his second TD run of the night. The Destroyers, however, would go on to win their next three games to improve to 4-1.

GREATER MIDDLESEX CONFERENCE AT A GLANCE

St. Thoms Aquinas results: Lost to Delaware Valley, 41-0, Sept. 6; Lost to Middlesex, 41-8, Sept. 13; Lost to South River, 32-7, Sept. 20.

St. Thomas Aquinas on offense: St. Thomas’ troubles so far can be explained merely by citing its youth. Quarterback Jayden Young is one of several freshmen with starting roles for first-year head coach Brian Meeney. Also among that kiddie corps are running back Joel Marellis and receivers Najee Lovejoy and Kyle Hall. They hope to sprung Friday by a veteran front line anchored by seniors Thomas Roarty and Jon Campagna.

St. Thomas Aquinas on defense: this unit showed vast improvement last week by holding South River to one touchdown in the first half as St. Thomas seized a 7-6 lead. The Trojans would lose, but not before finding a glimmer of hope to latch onto for the ensuing week of practice. Roarty and fellow linemen Campagna, Elijah Johnson and Brian Moyer and linbackers Alejandro Santiago and Devlin Stein lead the way.

Dunellen results: Lost to Middlesex, 48-12, Sept. 6; Defeated Highland Park, 42-0, Sept. 20.

Dunellen on offense: After being held to under 40 rushing yards Sept. 6 against Middlesex, Dunellen’s ground attack came alive last week against Highland Park. Senior Andre Hart and junior Adem Sangiray ran for two touchdowns apiece and junior Qwentin Rose and sophomore Nasir Tippett each had one behind the blocks of Tri Tran, Hector Gomez and Joe Gomez and under the direction of junior QB Anthony DeNapoli.

Dunellen on defense: Linebackers Sangiray and junior Mike Burr were standouts in Dunellen’s lopsided loss to Middlesex, and again provided steady leadership last week in the shutout win against Highland Park. Tyje Kelton, Jaylen Schummer, Tran, Tippett, Rose and Hart also did their parts with consistency. Sangiray and Hart also played well in the loss last year to Bishop Ahr.

Prediction: Dunellen, 28-13.
