Rosters set for GMC Baseball Senior All-Star Game and Underclassmen Showcase - MyCentralJersey.com

Rosters have been finalized for the 29th annual Frank Gavigan Greater Middlesex Conference Baseball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Game and the sixth annual GMCBCA Underclassmen Showcase, which will be played as a doubleheader at North Brunswick’s Community Park on June 9.

In lieu of charging admission to the games, the GMCBCA respectfully invites spectators to consider making a donation at the gate, which is not at all required, to The Marisa Tufaro Foundation, a tax-exempt nonprofit whose mission is to help children in need throughout the greater Middlesex County area.

Joe DaRold, official videographer of the MyCentralJersey.com Autoland Classic, is volunteering his time and expertise to shoot video of both games.

In addition, the Home News Tribune and Courier News will provide coverage of the doubleheader.

A GMCBCA committee selected players for the Underclassmen Showcase. The Senior All-Star game will feature seniors who were named All-Division, as well as at least one upperclassman from any school which did not have a senior All-Division representative.

More than 100 of the league’s top players will participate in the doubleheader. Rosters for both games can be found below. The Fireside Grill in Marlboro sponsors the event.

The Underclassmen Showcase will start at noon. First pitch for the Senior All-Star Game is 2 p.m. The league's Most Valuable Player and top pitcher for the 2019 season will be announced and honored during the doubleheader.

Players for the Senior All-Star game have been split geographically into North and South squads.

Mike Murray (St. Joseph), Justin Nastasi (Middlesex) and Frank Paprota (Perth Amboy Tech) will coach the North team.

Matt Donaghue (Old Bridge), CJ Hendricks (South Brunswick) and Dan Poulsen (South Amboy) will coach the South team.

The Underclassmen showcase features 40 of the league’s top performers and has attracted dozens of college coaches each of the past three years.

Several of this year’s participants have already made nonbinding commitments to major Division I programs including Virginia, Duke and Penn State.

An extended infield-outfield workout will precede the nine-inning Underclassmen Showcase game, during which college coaches who come to scout the event will have an opportunity to evaluate participants.

College coaches from NCAA Division I programs – including Rutgers and Seton Hall – through Division III schools traditionally have attended the showcase, which three years ago attracted coaches from as far away as George Washington University.

Former East Brunswick star Tyler Burnham, the Home News Tribune’s 2016 Player of the Year, received a scholarship offer from Seton Hall after a member of the school’s coaching staff scouted the lefthanded pitcher in the showcase.

The underclassmen from the conference selected to participate in the showcase have been divided into two 20-player squads, one that North Brunswick head coach Mark Blevins will lead and the other that South River head coach Mike Lepore Jr. will lead. Other coaches from the GMC will assist Blevins and Lepore.

The Marisa Tufaro Foundation, established in loving memory of its namesake less than two years ago, has already made a profound impact, donating more than $75,000 to assist pediatric patients and others children in need.

Marisa, who would have been a sophomore this year at Edison High School, was born with a complex cardiac defect that required six open-heart surgeries. Despite being hospitalized for more than two years and maintaining hundreds of doctor’s appointments, she lived a vibrant life that inspired. After her sixth surgery, Marisa developed two life-threatening conditions that necessitated a heart transplant.

A postoperative complication developed into a rare form of cancer that riddled her brain and body. Marisa succumbed to her illness following a valiant battle on Jan. 30, 2017.

The GMCBCA, which also sponsors a memorial arts scholarship in Marisa's name, has been among The Marisa Tufaro Foundation's biggest supporters.

Marisa is the daughter of Home News Tribune baseball beat writer Greg Tufaro and longtime Edison Township Public Schools educator Cyndi Tufaro.
