Readers can vote in the poll located at the bottom of this article for our 2019 Winter Sports Athlete of the Year.

The poll closes March 22 at 7 p.m.

Girls basketball, Emma Boslet, Bishop Ahr

The junior helped propel Bishop Ahr to its first Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament title since 2001. The 5-foot-10 guard was named the GMCT’s Most Valuable Player and led the Trojans with 14.5 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 5.1 apg and, 3.2 steals per game during the season. She has committed to NCAA Division I Saint Joseph’s University.

Girls bowling, Mackenzie Keane, East Brunswick

The freshman impressed during tryouts and only got better as the season went on. Notably, she became the second East Brunswick girl to win a GMC Individual title by taking the stepladder final, 244-209. She finished with a 199 average that led the GMC Red Division and had a GMC-leading 709 high series.

Boys swimming, Nathan Borges, Piscataway

The junior had Middlesex County’s best finish at the Meet of Champions at Gloucester County Institute of Technology. Borges placed second in the 500 freestyle (4:31.68) and finished sixth at the 200 freestyle (1:41.88). At the GMC Championships, he set meet records in the 500 freestyle (4:33.29) and the 200 freestyle (1:41.20).

Girls swimming, Sarah Hardy, Bishop Ahr

Over the last four winters, the senior has been as much of a staple in area swimming as water. Hardy, a four-time Home News Tribune Girls Swimmer of the Year, capped her final season for the Trojans by winning the Individual State title in the 100 butterfly and took fourth in the 200 IM. As a freshman and sophomore, she won state titles in the 200 IM.

Boys track, Miles Liggins, South Brunswick

The senior burst onto the state scene with a second-place finish at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions. In the 800 meters, Liggins blazed to a 1:54.10, which also set a program record. Additionally, Liggins captured gold medals in the 800 at Central Group IV (1:59.22) and the GMC Championships (1:58.28).

Boys hoops, Chad Baker, Colonia

The senior averaged 19 points while leading the Patriots to a North 2 Group 3 title and to the GMC Tournament semifinals. He will represent Colonia in the New Jersey North-South All-Star Classic. Baker plays above the rim and is a stellar defender. With teammate Luke Valeriano, a 1,000-point scorer, breaking his ankle in the sectional quarterfinal, Baker averaged 20.6 points in the playoffs to carry the team.

Wrestling, Zach DelVecchio, South Plainfield

Owner of a 158-17 record that ranks fourth all time in school history, the senior capped a stellar career with a 220-pound state title. The two-sport star, who was a bruising fullback on the gridirion, won 37 bouts this season while leading the Tigers to a state-record 35th straight district crown, 11th consecutive GMC Tournament title and school-record fourth state championship in a row.

Boys bowling, James Stoveken, Woodbridge

The reigning GMC individual champion also led his team to a conference tournament title on the way to being featured in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd. Stoveken led the league with a 229 average and bowled the seventh sanctioned 300 game of his high school career, which is a national record.

Girls track, Rebecca Ochan, Highland Park

Ochan placed second in the 400 meters at the Meet of Champions with a time of 56.59, improving upon her 57.68 first-place time in the same event at the Group I championships. In the Central Group I meet, Ochan ran a 59.56 to win a gold medal in the 400 meters. At the GMC championsips, Ochan placed first in the 400 meters with a time of 59.27.

Ice hockey, Dean Rocco and Ty Carter, St. Joseph

A three-year varsity player, Carter played forward his entire life until junior year, sacrificing offensive statistics to fill a team need on the blue line. The senior captain helped St. Joseph win two GMC tournament titles and an Egan Cup championship. He paired with Rocco to face the state’s top forwards. Carter was the glue that kept the team together following a 3-6-1 start. Despite missing four games in the middle of the season, the offensive-minded defenseman still finished third in scoring. A two-year varsity letterwinner, Rocco was a stay-at-home defenseman who was a physical force in every game and found offensive success. As the season progressed, Rocco became more confident in his skills.

Girls Wrestling, Gabby Miller, Monroe

The freshman captured the 147-pound title in the inaugural NJSIAA Girls Wrestling Championships at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, where she avenged a loss in the regions with a 6-3 decision over North Bergen’s Amanda Pace. Miller missed the inaugural Middlesex County girls wrestling tournament with a shoulder injury.

We expect all voters to adhere to NJSIAA rules, conducting themselves in a sportsmanlike fashion.
