The General Medical Council is urgently reviewing the qualifications of around 3000 doctors after it emerged that a psychiatrist was able to practise for 23 years in the UK with fraudulent credentials.

Zholia Alemi joined the UK medical register in 1992 under an exemption that allowed certain graduates from British Commonwealth countries to obtain registration on the basis of their qualification without having to pass the standard, two part assessment of their medical knowledge and skills, the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board exam.
