Greg Tufaro's Week 5 GMC football predictions and analysis

Friday

Sayreville (4-0) at Edison (3-1), 7 p.m.: The Greater Middlesex Conference White Division championship will be decided. Sayreville can win the division title outright with a victory. With a loss, Sayreville, Edison and North Brunswick would finish in a three-way tie atop the division standings and share the division crown. Edison will look to ride the backfield tandem of Armani Bell and Tylor Montford behind a veteran offensive line as the Eagles hope to put together sustained drives to keep the ball out of the hands of Sayreville’s quick-strike offense. Dean Escobar and Lucas Loffredo, who split time under center last week, bring different skills sets at quarterback. The Bombers counter with some of the league’s most dangerous offensive weapons including slots Connor Holmes and Jacari Carter. Running back Zuriel Wright is coming off a career-high 177-yard performance. Quarterback Mark Whitford is a dual threat. Edison coach Matt Fulham, a Sayreville alum, led the Eagles to an upset of his alma mater in 2015 and a near upset (18-13 loss) the following season. Edison 22-21.

Metuchen (0-4) at Bishop Ahr (3-2), 7 p.m.: Bishop Ahr snapped a two-game skid with a 28-21 win over Spotswood. The Trojans have an impressive win over Dunellen on their resume. Bishop Ahr has a stellar offensive line and several gifted backs including Jalen Brooks, who rushed 20 times for 176 yards and two touchdowns last weekend. Metuchen relies upon gifted quarterback Will Hronich. The Bulldogs are healthier than they were two weeks ago. Bishop Ahr 24-12.

J.F. Kennedy (1-3) at Montgomery (1-3), 7 p.m.: The Cougars’ lone victory is over a winless Scotch Plains-Fanwood team. Montgomery has since played well in consecutive losses to Warren Hills and undefeated Immaculata, which defeated the Cougars 21-16 last week. J.F. Kennedy is better than its record indicates. The Mustangs played well in a 28-27 season-opening loss to Carteret and in last weekend’s setback to South Plainfield. Montgomery 21-20.

Carteret (2-2) at Rahway (3-1), 7 p.m.: After opening the year with wins over J.F. Kennedy and Bishop Ahr, the Ramblers are looking to rebound from losses to St. Joseph and Colonia. Rahway represents the third straight high-powered offense Carteret will face. The Indians have won three in a row since dropping a 42-31 decision to Somerville, which is ranked No. 10 in USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey’s statewide Top 20 poll. Rahway 28-7.

Old Bridge (1-3) at J.P. Stevens (2-2), 7 p.m.: The Knights posted a 21-14 win over Perth Amboy, which defeated J.P. Stevens 27-13. The Hawks are coming off a 19-7 victory over Plainfield. Old Bridge’s losses are to three-time defending sectional champion Westfield, defending Central Group V champion South Brunswick and perennial state power Piscataway. J.P. Stevens’ talented skill position players will challenge Old Bridge’s defense. Old Bridge 21-14.

South River (3-1) at Bernards (3-1), 7 p.m.: The Rams are looking to rebound from last weekend’s 34-22 loss to Dunellen that snapped South River’s regular-season winning streak, dating back to 2016, at 14 games. The Mountaineers are looking to rebound from a 23-13 loss to defending sectional champion Hillside, which returns the bulk of its lineup from a team that handed South River a 28-7 playoff loss last year. Bernards 22-21.

South Brunswick (3-2) at East Brunswick (0-4), 7 p.m.: The Vikings are coming off a 27-14 loss to Union, ranked No. 16 in in USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey’s statewide Top 20 poll. East Brunswick made a change at quarterback with immediate results as Tim Gudzak was able to move the offense in a 48-28 loss to Perth Amboy. Gudzak completed 11 of 28 passes for 181 yards and a score. He also rushed 11 times for 143 yards and two touchdowns. South Brunswick 28-14.

South Plainfield (2-2) at North Hunterdon (1-3), 7 p.m.: Ashwin DeGroot carried six times for 175 yards and two scores, made five tackles and converted three PATs in a 29-6 victory over J.F. Kennedy last weekend. After opening the year with a victory over winless Scotch Plains-Fanwood, the Lions have dropped four straight to foes with a combined 10-3 record. South Plainfield 19-18.

North Brunswick (4-1) at New Brunswick (1-3), 7 p.m.: Christian Petrillo completed 8 of 16 passes for 127 yards and two scores and rushed 17 times for 96 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-7 win over Woodbridge last weekend. According to the research of North Brunswick play-by-play announcer Korbid Thompson, Petrillo is believed to be the first quarterback in school history to run for two scores and pass for two touchdowns in a game. North Brunswick 28-13.

Piscataway (4-0) at Perth Amboy (2-2), 7 p.m.: The Chiefs have steamrolled over three opponents with a combined 3-9 record and defeated defending sectional champion South Brunswick 35-21. The Panthers are vastly improved. Running back Erick Rivera impressed in last weekend’s win over East Brunswick. Piscataway 29-13.

Monroe (0-4) at Woodbridge (1-4), 7 p.m.: After a challenging first half of the season schedule, the Barrons hope to get on a bit of a run against the Falcons, who have similarly played a difficult slate. Based on comparative scores in losses to Edison, North Brunswick and Sayreville and considering Woodbridge beat New Brunswick, which beat Monroe, the Barrons obviously have the edge. Woodbridge 28-7.

Butler at Dunellen (4-1), 7 p.m.: Butler graciously agreed to fill an open date on Dunellen’s schedule after Highland Park made a decision last month to finish the season as a jayvee team. The Bulldogs had a three-game winning streak snapped in last weekend’s 30-15 loss to Hasbrouck Heights. Dunellen snapped South River’s regular-season winning streak at 14 games with an impressive 34-22 win last weekend. Dunellen 26-13.

Saturday

Middlesex (1-3) at Spotswood (0-4), 1 p.m.: Coming off a bye, Middlesex had an extra week to prepare for the Chargers, who should not be considered a reflection of their record. South River defeated Spotswood 42-21 and blanked Middlesex 34-0. Spotswood 26-21.

Immaculata (4-0) at St. Joseph (4-1), 1 p.m.: The Spartans rallied for a 21-16 win over Montgomery last weekend. St. Joseph, which snapped three-time defending sectional champion Westfield’s home winning streak at 21 games last weekend, has played a more challenging schedule. Immaculata’s wins are over teams with a combined 4-13 record. The game marks homecoming for St. Joseph, which will also honor military, police, firefighters and first responders. St. Joseph 28-12.

Colonia (3-2) at Summit (4-0), 2:30 p.m.: The Patriots, led by reigning MyCentralJersey.com Player of the Week Justice Harris, are on a three-game winning streak. Colonia has played a more challenging schedule. Summit’s wins are over schools with a combined 4-13 record. The Patriots played well in losses to St. Joseph and Hillsborough and are a vastly improved team since those defeats. Colonia must stop Summit’s high-powered offense and may look to do so with some sustained drives. Colonia 21-20.
