General Motors recalled more than 30,000 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans to fix a defect with the climate control module that can start a fire.
The recall involves 27,227 Chevrolet Express and 3,062 GMC Savana models from the 2016 to 2018 model years.
Components inside the manual rear CCM in these vehicles may overheat if the temperature is set to maximum heat or the mode knob is set to maximum floor vent and an electrical short occurs.
GM says it is aware of four fires but no injuries due to this issue. The company reviewed the first fire connected to this recall in April. It launched an investigation in May that found the fire risk was connected to CCM units supplied by ERAE Automotive Systems. GM says there were differences between how the ERAE modules and those from alternate supplier Delphi were made. Delphi used different insulation material on the potentiometer‘s wiring connectors.
GM will notify customers of the recall and ask them to take the vehicles to their dealers. Mechanics will remove the electrical insulation from a wiring connector within the CCM to correct the problem.
Owners of the affected vehicles may contact Chevrolet customer service at 800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 800-462-8782. GM’s identification number for this recall is 18299.
