The all-new 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 is now available at dealerships, but one important piece of the puzzle is still missing. Although the 2019 Sierra is slated to receive a new diesel engine, models equipped with this powertrain haven’t arrived yet.

Details about the Sierra diesel are still a little sparse, so here’s a refresher on what we know — and what we’re still speculating about.

Facts

The engine will be a 3.0-liter inline-six Duramax turbo-diesel, and it will also be offered on the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. It will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and auto start/stop technology.

GMC’s website says this engine will be available with the SLT trim. The brand has previously indicated that the diesel will also be available on the Elevation, AT4 and Denali trims. Expect it to be available starting early in 2019.

Earlier this month, preliminary specs leaked for the 3.0-liter diesel engine, based on screenshots from GM Canada’s dealer site. According to this source, the engine will make 282 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque and get 28 mph on the highway. It’s also said to have a maximum towing capacity of 7,800 pounds.

However, none of this information has been confirmed yet by General Motors, and the EPA hasn’t yet released any fuel economy estimates for the engine.

With the new year and the Sierra diesel’s release fast approaching, we can expect GMC to start filling in these gaps in our knowledge any day now.
