Day before funeral, GMC gives body to CCP for cremation

PANAJI: A family that was preparing to bid farewell to their beloved son and brother at St Thomas Church, Aldona, got a rude shock on Saturday when they found his body missing from the morgue of the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) at Bambolim.
Their grief was only compounded when they found that Januz Gonsalves, 24, had been cremated the previous day along with three unclaimed bodies by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP).
Gonsalves collapsed and died on a football field last Sunday, and while his family waited for three of his siblings to return to Goa, they kept his body at the GMC morgue. On Monday, a postmortem examination was conducted on his body.
GMC officials said the North Goa collector had given the GMC and CCP permission to cremate four unclaimed bodies that were lying at the morgue for over a year. While handing over the four bodies to the CCP for cremation at the St Inez crematorium, the morgue attendant allegedly handed over Gonsalves’s body instead of a 45-year-old male, Vishant Naik.
The glaring error came to light only on Saturday morning, when Gonsalves’s relatives went to the GMC to claim the body and take it home to Aldona for the final rites and funeral, which was scheduled at Aldona the same evening.
