Meet the Readers' Choice 2018 All-GMC Baseball Team

Voting is complete in the MyCentralJersey.com 2018 Readers’ Choice All-Greater Middlesex Conference Baseball poll.

A total of 69,810 votes were cast with Old Bridge outfielder Matt Flores receiving the most overall votes (7,962).

Only players who were selected All-Division at their respective positions by the league's coaches during the GMC Baseball Coaches Association's annual All-Conference and All-Division meeting, which was held at Monroe High School last month, were listed on the ballots. Players who earned at-large recognition were not included on the ballots.

Based on the final voting tallies, following is MyCentralJersey.com’s 2018 Readers' Choice All-GMC Baseball Team, which includes one catcher (top vote-getter), one first baseman (top vote-getter), three pitchers (top three vote-getters), three infielders (top three vote-getters) and three outfielders (top three vote-getters).

Catcher, A.J. Massaro, Wardlaw-Hartridge

The sophomore backstop batted .541 with a .838 slugging percentage after pacing the Rams with 11 doubles. He scored 15 runs, delivered 19 RBI, stole six bases and collected 20 hits in 37 at-bats. Massaro represented Wardlaw-Hartridge as a catcher on the All-Gold Division team.

First base, Matt Volpe, Metuchen

The senior slugger finished second on the club in hits (32) and RBI (20) while belting a team-leading 10 doubles and four homers. Volpe was also second on the team with a .405 batting average and was third on the club with 22 runs. His .708 slugging percentage also led Metuchen, which reached the Central Group II final.

Pitcher, Jacob Ciccone, South Brunswick

The junior lefthander had the second lowest ERA (0.70) in the conference. He struck out 57 batters in 50 innings and posted a deceptive 4-3 record. Ciccone hurled a two-hitter against reigning Red Division champion East Brunswick, allowed one earned run in a hard-luck loss to St. Joseph and allowed two earned runs in another hard-luck loss to reigning GMCT champion South Plainfield.

Pitcher, Pat Kannaley, Middlesex

The senior right-hander was utilized as a starter and out of the bullpen. He posted a deceptive 5-4 record with a 1.69 ERA. Kannaley struck out 51 batters in 54 innings. He exhibited pinpoint control for the reigning Blue Division co-champions, issuing just nine walks. The 684 pitches Kannaley threw were the second most on the club.

Pitcher, Tyler Dymond, Middlesex

The senior played a pivotal role in Middlesex’s run to a second straight state title. He fashioned a league-best 9-0 record and threw a team-high 61 and a third innings. Dymond struck out 60 batters and threw a team-high 1,013 pitches. He earned a no-decision, throwing a gutsy six and a third innings in a state semifinal win over Pennsville.

Infielder, Frank Lehmann, Colonia

The senior shortstop batted a team-leading .437, registering a club-best 38 hits in 87 at-bats. Lehmann also led Colonia with 22 RBI and 31 runs scored. He clubbed three doubles and two homers. Lehmann fanned just three times in 104 plate appearances while leading the White Division champion Patriots to the North 2 Group III final, which they lost to eventual state champion Somerville.

Infielder, Nick Charmello, South Amboy

The junior helped the Governors win the Gold Division championship, batting a team-leading .500 with a club-best 28 hits in 56 at-bats. Charmello also led South Amboy with nine doubles. He was second on the team with 26 runs scored. Charmello boasted a .660 slugging percentage and a .597 on-base percentage.

Infielder, Garrett Allo, East Brunswick Tech

There was no sophomore jinx for Allo, who followed up a phenomenal freshman campaign with a stellar year at the plate in which he batted a team-leading .439. Allo also topped the Tigers in hits (29), runs (28) and RBI (22). He parlayed six doubles and six triples into a .712 slugging percentage. Allo fanned just twice in 77 plate appearances.

Outfielder, Matt Flores, Old Bridge

The junior was the leading hitter on an Old Bridge club that saw its share of dominant arms. Flores batted .358, collecting 23 hits in 64 at-bats. He registered six doubles and two triples for a .500 slugging percentage. Flores also stole a club-best 14 bases while leading the Knights to the league tournament semifinals.

Outfielder, Bryant Skurbe, Monroe

An outstanding defensive outfielder, Skurbe was also Monroe’s top hitter. He earned All-Conference honors from the league’s head coaches after batting .424 with 25 hits in 59 at-bats. Skurbe finished with 15 runs scored and 13 RBI. He also stole seven bases. Nine of his hits went for extra bases including seven doubles, a triple and a homer.

Outfielder, Jon Sot, St. Joseph

One of the best all-around players in the state, Sot blended power with speed and covered a ridiculous amount of ground in center field. St. Joseph faced the best pitchers of any league team. Sot batted .386 with 38 hits in 84 at-bats. He collected nine doubles, two triples and a homer. He scored a team-leading 30 runs, stole a league-best 19 bases and delivered 17 RBI from the leadoff spot.
