Following are the Home News Tribune's first-, second-, third-, and fourth-team All-Greater Middlesex Conference baseball selections by position for the 2018 season.

FIRST TEAM ALL-GMC

P, Mike Falco, East Brunswick, Sr.

The righthander, who will continue his career at St. Joseph University, led the conference with 75 strikeouts. Falco fashioned a 5-2 record and allowed 11 earned runs over 52 1/3 innings for a 1.47 ERA. He allowed 32 hits and had a 1.05 WHIP. Falco led the Red Division Bears with four homers and was second on the team with 18 RBI. He hurled a perfect game in the state tournament against Freehold Township.

P, Kyle Subers, St. Joseph, Sr.

The senior right-hander arguably drew the toughest pitching assignments in the GMC, facing several perennial state powers including Bergen Catholic and St. Joseph of Montvale against which he allowed two earned runs over 12 2/3 innings. The Lafayette University signee boasted a 5-2 record with a 1.45 ERA. He struck out 58 batters over 48 1/3 innings.

P, Chris Michael, Colonia, Sr.

The righthander, renowned for pinpoint accuracy, waked just six batters in 67 1/3 innings. Michael also fanned 62 batters and had one of the best strikeout-to-walk ratios in the state. Michael registered a 5-3 mark with a 1.25 ERA. Opposing hitters batted just .196 against him. Michael also batted .316 with 24 hits, 15 RBI and 14 runs scored.

P, Chris Shine, South Plainfield, Jr.

The righthander posted a school record 0.39 ERA, allowing just three earned runs over 53 2/3 innings. Shine logged a deceptive 4-2 record, striking out 68 batters while walking just 13. He has committed to Seton Hall University. Shine is the GMC Pitcher of the Year.

C, Darius Diaz, Perth Amboy, Sr.

The Kennesaw State University signee has been among the league’s most consistent hitters the past two years. In addition to possessing one of the strongest and most accurate arms among all catchers statewide, Diaz batted .390 and scored a team-high 27 runs. He collected 32 hits, including six doubles, four triples and three home runs. Diaz, who displayed gap-to-gap power, drove home 12 runs from the leadoff spot.

1B, Seb Mueller, St. Joseph, So.

The power-hitting first baseman led the Falcons with six home runs and 32 RBI. Mueller and his teammates faced the best opposing pitching of any school in the league, coming up against more than half a dozen pitchers who have committed to Division I colleges. Mueller rapped out 33 hits, including five doubles. He scored 19 runs. Mueller was also a solid defensive first baseman.

INF, Jay Harry, Metuchen, So.

The shortstop led Metuchen to the Central Group II final with a .486 batting average. He was among the club’s leaders in multiple offensive categories. Harry collected 34 hits and 29 RBI. He scored 21 runs, doubled eight times and belted two homers. Harry complied a 4-1 record with a 1.09 ERA on the mound. A Penn State University commit, he was the winning pitcher in a stunning upset over Governor Livingston in the state tournament.

INF, Jared Venutolo, Middlesex, Jr.

The slick-fielding shortstop, who is a Division I prospect, carried the Blue Jays to a second straight Group I title with a team-leading .440 batting average and 40 hits. With his stellar defense, Venutolo aided a pitching staff that won 24 games and boasted a 2.28 ERA. Venutolo led Middlesex with 30 runs scored. He also had seven doubles and 11 RBI. Venutolo drew 14 walks and was hit by four pitches, contributing to a team-leading .527 on base percentage.

3B, Chris Brito, Perth Amboy, Sr.

The senior, who will continue his career at Rutgers University, led Perth Amboy to the conference tournament final for the first time in school history with a .387 batting average. Brito paced the Panthers with a team-leading four home runs. He scored 21 times and drove home 22 runs. Brito was pitched around to the tune of 23 walks. He was also hit by 12 pitches, contributing to a .608 on base percentage. Brito played third base, first base and shortstop.

OF, Jon Sot, St. Joseph, Sr.

The speedy center fielder was among the league’s most dynamic players, blending power with speed and the ability to hit to all fields. Sot batted .380 with 35 hits and 30 runs scored. He drove home 17 runs from the leadoff spot. Sot collected 12 extra-base hits including nine doubles, two triples and a homer. Sot is widely regarded as one of the state’s best defensive outfielders. He will continue his athletic career at Harvard University as a kicker and punter for the Crimson football team.

OF, Matt Peterson, Piscataway, Sr.

The outfielder had one of the best across-the-board offensive seasons of any conference player. He led a balanced Piscataway lineup with a .425 batting average. Peterson recorded 37 hits, including six doubles, four triples and a homer. He scored 29 runs and delivered 26 RBI. He will continue his athletic career as a football player at Utica College.

OF, Bryant Skurbe, Monroe, So.

In addition to being an outstanding hitter, Skurbe has emerged as one of the conference’s best defensive outfielders, with excellent range and a strong throwing arm. Skurbe batted a team-leading .424 with 25 hits for the Falcons. He collected seven doubles, a triple and a home run. Skurbe scored 15 runs and drove home 13 more.

DH, Matt Izzo, Spotswood, Sr.

The senior catcher batted a team-leading .443 with 35 hits and 30 RBI. Izzo hit safely in all but two games this season. He belted a team-high five homers, including three in one inning against New Brunswick to tie a national record. He caught every single pitch for a staff that hurled 162 innings and boasted a 2.32 team ERA.

UP, Matt Volpe, Metuchen, Sr.

The senior first baseman batted .405 with 32 hits, 15 of which went for extra bases. Volpe collected 10 doubles, four homers and a triple. He scored 22 runs and delivered 20 RBI. On the mound, Volpe fashioned a 4-3 record with a 2.73 ERA. He had a stellar second half of the season as a pitcher, allowing just two earned runs over his last 30 2/3 innings.

UP, Nick Payero, Monroe, Sr.

The Seton Hall University signee starred at pitcher and shortstop for the Falcons. On the mound, Payero complied a 5-4 record with a 1.91 ERA. He struck out 64 batters and walked just 17 over 55 innings. Payero batted .373 with eight doubles, a triple and a homer. He scored 21 runs and delivered 14 RBI.

UP, Frank Lehmann, Colonia, Sr.

Lehmann was the most difficult batter in the conference to strike out. He fanned just three times in 104 plate appearances. Lehmann led Colonia to the Central Group II final with a team-high .437 batting average. Lehmann had 38 hits, 31 runs, 22 RBI, two homers and three doubles. In addition to boasting a .925 fielding percentage at shortstop, he posted a 3-0 record with 1.80 ERA over 23 innings on the mound.

AL, Mike Stanczak, South Plainfield, Sr.

The heavy-hitting shortstop, who will continue his career at Kings College, belted a conference-leading nine home runs. Stanczak helped South Plainfield win a conference tournament championship for the first time in school history with a team-leading 25 RBI. His eight doubles contributed to a .692 slugging percentage. Stanczak was second on the club with 21 runs scored. 

AL, Andrew Tan, North Brunswick, Jr.

The Binghamton University commit led the conference with 38 RBI. He was tops on a resurgent North Brunswick squad with 34 hits, including 11 doubles, one triple and three home runs. Tan scored 20 runs and boasted a .569 slugging percentage.
