Greater Middlesex Conference 2018 season in review
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Elan Dorkhman's performance during the 2018 season helped Old Bridge go where it has never gone before.
The senior, who finished with a state-high 392 kills, to go along with 29 blocks, 236 digs, and 47 aces, led the way for his team both vocally and with his play, as it pulled off a rare trifecta: it won the GMC Tournament, Central Jersey sectional title, and the overall state title.
COACH OF THE YEAR: Although J.P. Stevens still had one of the most fearsome hitters in the state in Eric Li returning, it still graduated some key pieces from last year's GMC and Central Jersey finalist, and getting back to that level appeared to be a challenge for coach Anthony White's squad.
And despite a bumpy 3-3 start to the season, the Hawks found their groove in late April and early May, and looked like it didn't miss a beat from last season. It still managed to finish 19-7, and reached the GMC final once again, before bowing out to a tough Christian Brothers team in the Central Jersey quarterfinals.
TEAM OF THE YEAR: It was simply a historic season for Old Bridge.
The Knights won three titles this year- the GMC, the Central Jersey sectional, and the overall state title. It was the team's first GMC title since 2012, while it had never won a sectional or state title in program history. While Elan Dorkhman was certainly the focus, he was surrounded by a very talented cast, including senior middle blocker Randall Anderson, along with juniors Andrew Zaleck, Josh DeWitt, and Justin Tuohy. Zaleck's mid-season return from an injury certainly provided a boost for the Knights, who finished the year 32-5.
With a strong junior class, Old Bridge is poised to remain at or near the top of the GMC once again in 2019.
