Spotswood 8, South River 2: Jack Welsh hit a three-run homer in the seventh to seal the win for Spotswood. The Chargers are now two victories away from sharing the Blue Division title with Middlesex.
Spotswood must defeat South River on Saturday and New Brunswick on Monday to share the crown with the Blue Jays.
South River 10, New Brunswick 2: Ariel Valdez went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs to lead South River. Mark Pacheco pitched a seven-hitter, allowing seven hits with four strikeouts. Also joining South River's hit parade were Brandon Szerszen (2-for-4, double, RBI), Joey Leviton (2-for-3, three 3 runs scored) and Chris Zyskowski (two RBIs).
Perth Amboy Tech 3, Timothy Christian 1: Winning pitcher Victor Caraballo allowed one earned run while striking out 12 and scattering six hits.
Anthony Niech recorded the final four outs to register a save.
Aaron Batista delivered two RBI for the Patriots. Jose Puntiel also plated a run.
Daniel Lai went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Tigers.
Caraballo went 2-for-3.
South Amboy 4, Dunellen 3: Winning pitcher Kyle Gasiewski allowed one earned run over six and two thirds innings before reaching his pitch limit.
Zach Honimar retired the game’s final batter with the tying run at second base to record a save.
John Gonzalez’s two-run single in the home sixth gave South Amboy a 4-2 lead.
Kenny Tunison made the score 4-3 with an RBI single in the top of the seventh. He stole second to move himself into scoring position, but was left stranded.
Alex Dornbeirer pitched a strong game but was the hard-luck loser.
John McCleery had two hits for South Amboy.
With the victory, South Amboy improved to 12-2 overall and 9-1 in the Gold Division.
The Governors face second-place East Brunswick Tech (10-4, 9-2), the defending division champion, on Monday. South Amboy won the first meeting between the schools, 1-0.
Dunellen fell to 9-4 overall and 8-3 in the division.
Colonia 10, Irvington 0: The Patriots parlayed 10 walks and four hits into a mercy-rule victory on Senior Day.
Winning pitcher John Rodriguez scattered two hits and fanned eight without walking a batter over four innings. Jason Hilenski hurled a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts to seal the victory.
Nick Nielson collected three RBI. Frank Lehmann, Lou Matten, John Rodriguez and Hilenski each plated a run.
Colonia (14-4) scored three runs in the first and three more in the fourth. The Patriots invoked the mercy rule with a four-run rally in the fifth.
Lehmann scored three runs and Matt Zawacki crossed home twice.
East Brunswick Tech 11, Highland Park 0: Joe Corsaro hurled a complete-game shutout and helped his own cause, going 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI for the Tigers.
East Brunswick Tech (10-4 overall, 9-2 division) outhit the Owls 9-3 and scored all its runs in the first three innings. Garrett Allo went 3-for-3 with a triple, five RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.
RJ Jobin singled, stole two bases and scored twice. Mike Garlatti had a hit and an RBI. Chris Rosa and David Hall each scored twice.
Donald Wong went 2-for-2 for Highland Park, while teammate Dylan Powell singled. The Owls fell to 3-11.
Corsaro fanned five, walked one and scattered three hits in a game shortened to five innings via the mercy rule.
Middlesex 13, North Brunswick 3: Victorious hurler David Hendricks went the distance in a game shortened to five innings via the mercy rule, scattering five hits as the Raiders (13-6) had their five-game winning streak snapped.
Jared Zimbardo went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored for Middlesex (15-3), which defeated its second White Division team this season.
The Blue Jays scored five runs in the second to break a 2-2 tie. After each team scored a single run in the ensuing frame, Middlesex rallied for five runs in the fourth to invoke the mercy rule.
Tyrus Chippendale went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for Middlesex. Teammate Jarret May went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Tyler Dymond contributed two RBI, a double and a run scored to the victory.
North Brunswick committed four errors which led to six unearned runs. Middlesex pounded out 11 hits and benefited from six walks.
Damian Ortiz had two RBI and Danny Reardon plated a run for the Raiders. Caleb Rodriguez scored two of North Brunswick’s runs. Five Raiders had one hit apiece.
Hendricks struck out two, walked two and threw 69 pitches.
J.F. Kennedy 3, Bishop Ahr 1: Victorious hurler Zack Schneider worked five and two thirds shutout innings, while Anthony Hein pitched out of a bases-loaded jam and TJ Rivera closed the game for a save.
Lou Truppa delivered two huge RBI for the Mustangs (3-14), who snapped a 10-game losing streak.
J.F. Kennedy has lost eight games by three or fewer runs including four games by a single run.
Bishop Ahr fell to 4-14.
