In 1959, the United States had very restrictive laws dealing with overall tractor-trailer length, so GMC developed a truck with a short cab that allowed for longer trailers: just 48 inches from the front bumper to the rear of the cab. The "Crackerbox" tractors were built from 1959 through the late 1960s, and this 1959 magazine advertisement touts the DLR8000's short length and light weight.
General Motors print advertisements of this era have some amazing artwork.
The various divisions of General Motors commissioned some of the most gorgeous magazine advertisements ever made during this era, usually painted by hand by the best commercial artists in the industry, and this heavy-duty truck ad from GMC is one of my favorites.
