St. Joseph 7, J.P. Stevens 6: With his hitting streak on the line, and more importantly the outcome of the game in his hands, Jon Sot snapped a 6-6 tie with an RBI single in the top of the eighth.
Sot, who has now hit safely in 19 consecutive contests, scored pinch runner Matt Hennelly, inserted for Nick Scull, who led off the inning with a single. Tim Leano followed with a bunt on which the Hawks unsuccessfully attempted to erase Hennelly at second. Hennelly advanced to third on the play when an infielder’s throw sailed into center field, putting runners on the corners for Sot. The error was J.P. Stevens’ seventh of the game.
After J.P. Steven rallied for four runs in the home sixth to take a 6-5 lead, the Falcons knotted the contest in the ensuing frame on Adam Boucher’s sacrifice fly. After Mike Rocco led off with a single and Seb Mueller was hit with a pitch, Tom Faggiano advanced both runners with a flyout.
Jake Hellwig earned the win with three strong innings of relief. The Falcons were outhit 15-6.
Monroe 4, South Brunswick 2: The Falcons scored one run on a fielder’s choice and another on an infield error to snap a 2-2 deadlock in the ninth inning and salvage a series split.
Vinnie Abene earned the win with six stellar innings of scoreless relief. He struck out the final two batters of the game with the bases loaded to preserve the victory. The senior righthander fanned eight, allowed four walks and scattered four hits. He threw 91 pitches – 58 for strikes – and induced five groundouts.
Sean Saviano (RBI) and John Albrecht (two runs) had two hits apiece for Monroe. Albrecht doubled and walked. Sean Walter had the Falcons’ only other hit.
Justin Cross hurled eight innings, fanning four, walking four, scattering four hits and allowing two earned runs for a no decision.
Felix Quinones (4-for-5) and Kevin Reyes each doubled for South Brunswick, which outhit Monroe 8-5 and benefited from six free passes but stranded 11 runners.
Mike Nally, Jordan Glassman and Mike Reyes each had a hit for the Vikings.
Metuchen 15, South River 5: After being limited to 15 runs over a five-game stretch during which they lost four contests, the Bulldogs have been on an offensive tear of late, amassing 35 runs over their last three games.
Metuchen got all the offense it needed against the Rams in the first inning, scoring eight times.
Jay Harry went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Matt Volpe doubled twice. Even Derector went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Winning pitcher Sean McCadden singled, doubled and played three runs.
Nick Razzano had two hits for the Rams, who were outhit 15-5
Perth Amboy, 5 Edison 2: Senior shortstop Chris Brito, a Rutgers University signee, collected his 100th career hit and finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored to help the Panthers win their second straight.
Perth Amboy has won three of its last four. Bryan Valenzuela doubled in support of winning pitcher Virgilio Cabrera, who scattered three hits, fanned two and allowed two runs (one earned). Pelther Minier hurled a scoreless inning of relief for a save.
Evrin Virola went 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored for Edison, while teammate Colin Lombardo singled.
South Plainfield 10, Piscataway 7: The Tigers on their third straight and completed a series sweep of the Chiefs, who scored five runs in the seventh inning to make the outcome interesting.
Piscataway was outhit 12-10 and benefited from five South Plainfield errors. The Tigers scored four runs in the first and three more runs in the third to build a 7-2 lead.
Connor Adams, Chris Shine and Ashwin DeGroot had two hits apiece for South Plainfield. Mike Stanczak, Billy Keane, Adams and Shine each had an RBI. Chris Born plated two runs. The Tigers stranded 10 runners.
Ro Morris and Jordan Brown each had two hits for the Chiefs. Six teammates had one hit apiece.
East Brunswick 4, Old Bridge 1: After squandering a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth, the Bears rallied for three runs in the home half of the inning to snap a 1-1 tie and salvage a series split.
Diego Garcia Ceballos highlighted the rally with a three-run double.
Old Bridge scored its lone run in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk with one away. James Schuld, who was pitching in relief, struck out the next two batters to work out of the jam.
Brad Edwards, Tucker, Nevin, Mike Falco and Jacob Baumann scored for the Bears. Ryan Bradley crossed home with Old Bridge’s lone run.
Sonny Fauci, a St. John’s University commit, was the hard-luck loser. He allowed four unearned runs, struck out seven and walked three over six innings.
Each team mustered just two hits. The Knights hurt themselves with four errors.
East Brunswick took a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Bishop Ahr 17, New Brunswick 2: Senior Devin Merle earned his first varsity win, fanning six and allowing one run on three hits over four innings.
Normally a reliever, Merle was pressed into a spot start today with the injuries to starters Rich Albrecht and Sean Flynn.
Junior Kyle Orta led a 14-hit attack with three hits including a solo homer in the second inning and an RBI single in the fourth.
Bishop Ahr jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first. Christian Kadi capped the rally with a two-run single.
Gerard Chiricolo went 2-for-4 with a double. Sammy Rodriguez (2-for-4) added a two-run triple in the third inning.
Brandon Rodriguez (1-for-2 with three RBI), Ryan Pittari (2-for-3 with two RBI) and Joe Puerschner (1—for-2 with two RBI) contributed offensively.
Bishop Ahr (2-9) snapped a nine-game losing streak.
Middlesex 7, Sayreville 0: Winning pitcher Tyler Dymond struck out six, scattered five hits and walked one over six innings as the Blue Jays (13-1) extended their winning streak to 13 games.
Middlesex provided Dymond with all the offensive support he needed, rallying for four runs in the top of the first. The Blue Jays tackled on single run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to produce the final margin.
Michael Schweyher went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Jarrett May and Jack Hnylycia each had a hit and two RBI. Tyrus Chippendale, Jared Venutolo, Jared Craig and Dymond each scored a run.
Bryan Fernandez collected three of Sayreville’s five hits. Teammates Drew Zimmerman and Rom Ruck also singled.
Patrick Kannaley hurled a perfect inning of relief to preserve the shutout against the Bombers (6-7).
Colonia 4, North Brunswick 0: Winning pitcher Nick Nielsen went the distance, hurling a four-hit shutout with three strikeouts and no walks to help the Patriots (9-4) salvage a series split.
Colonia, whose four losses this season, including Monday's 1-0 setback to the Raiders, are all one-run defeats, scored twice in the first inning to take an early lead.
Nick Michael contributed a single and an RBI. Tom Mitch scored twice. Frank Lehmann went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Nielsen singled for the Patriots, who were outhit 4-3.
Damian Ortiz, Caleb Rodriguez, Danny Reardon and Jason Roodriguez all had hits for North Brunswick (8-5).
Three North Brunswick pitchers combined to walk seven batters and allow four unearned runs as six errors victimized the staff.
Woodbridge 2, J.F. Kennedy 1: Sam Duffy and Andrew Galvach delivered RBI for the Barrons (10-3), who extended their winning streak to four games with their second straight one-run victory over the Mustangs.
Winning pitcher Robert Nunez went the route. He fanned nine, allowed two hits, walked one and yielded one earned run. Nunez threw 100 pitches. He allowed singles to TJ Rivera and Zach Schneider, who scored J.F. Kennedy's lone run.
The Mustangs have endured four one-run losses this season, three during a current five-game losing streak.
Joe Muccili and Carlos Marte each crossed home for Woodbridge. Galvach had the game-winning RBI.
