To say that the GMC Prep boys soccer team has gotten off to a good start this season would be a severe understatement.
The Bulldogs are 10-0 having defeated every foe they have faced thus far, already making 2018 easily one of the best seasons in program history. Last year the GMC boys made it to the GHSA state playoffs for the first time ever and even won their first round matchup before being knocked out in the second. This season the soccer Dogs are looking to better that result.
There at the center of the team’s success is junior forward Dylan Smith who gets the job done whenever GMC Prep needs a goal and is among the team leaders in scoring. In a phone interview with The Union-Recorder, second-year head coach Jason Barbee called Smith one of the team’s best offensive athletes on a squad obviously loaded with talent.
“He’s just a phenomenal player,” Barbee said. “He has a team player mindset and a mindset for winning. He’s a huge part of what we’re doing, so we’re glad to have him.”
The team’s first 10 games have been filled with highlights for Smith. GMC Prep took the field against Athens Christian in late February for the Dogs’ first area matchup of the season, and he produced. Smith scored all three of the team’s goals giving himself a hat trick in the Bulldogs’ 3-1 road win to get the area schedule started on the right foot, but a larger opponent loomed in the Aquinas Fightin’ Irish. The two were set to take the field last Friday, and the visitors from Augusta were looking for retribution after last year’s meeting with GMC.
“When we played Aquinas at home, that was the most important region game we had played up to that point,” said Barbee. “Aquinas has always been a soccer powerhouse. We beat them for the first time in program history last year.”
Smith showed his scoring prowess once again, netting two of the Bulldogs’ three goals in the 3-0 shutout of their region rival. Teammates can surely know that when they get a pass to the junior in good scoring position that they will receive a stat bump as well in the assist column. The GMC soccer coach added that scoring is not Smith’s only attribute, as he carries a couple others that aid the Bulldogs — one of them being an endless want to see his team succeed.
“He's like the the Energizer bunny,” Barbee said. “He just doesn’t stop.”
The GMC Prep boys soccer team is more than halfway through its regular season schedule and, thanks in part to Smith, has achieved another milestone never before reached by the program. In the latest rankings on www.eurosportscoreboard.com, a website with results and rankings of high school soccer teams, the Bulldogs are ranked No. 8 and have a better record than any other team in the top 10. They will continue what they hope to be another march to the GHSA state playoffs Tuesday at home against area opponent Greene County High School before jumping back into non-area play Friday against John Milledge Academy.
“We really expect a lot out of these guys,” said Barbee. “We’re off to a great roll this year, and we’re really happy with what we’re doing so far.”
