MultiPro Tailgate Incorporates Bed Step, Work Table, and Cargo Organizer
The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 is wholly improved over its predecessor, with sleeker styling, better aerodynamics, and even a bit of weight loss thanks to aluminum swing panels (doors, hood, and tailgate). And like every Sierra before it, the 2019 model shares a lot with the all-new Chevrolet Silverado. But one feature that will remain Sierra-only is the slick new MultiPro tailgate, standard on the Sierra SLT and Sierra Denali.
The MultiPro tailgate features six distinct functions, which Roger Olle, GMC design engineer, demonstrates in the video below.
The tailgate incorporates two sections: an outer tailgate that comprises a U shape and an inner tailgate that takes up the rest. When latched together, the system operates as a conventional tailgate. Then, the bedlining material on the inner tailgate can flip up to provide a load stop, though cargo still needs to be secured properly.
With the outer tailgate folded flat, the inner tailgate can be flipped down, allowing for easier cargo access—the owner can step closer to the cargo with the inner tailgate out of the way. With that portion flipped down, the bedlining material folds out to become a step into the bed, with a deployable handle to aid in entry and exit.
With the tailgate up, the inner tailgate can flip flat and be used as a standing table of sorts for worksite laptops or tailgating margarita blenders, thanks to the bed-mounted 110V power point. The bedlining on the inner tailgate can also fold up to provide some cargo security; this feature allows owners to carry longer cargo in the upper half of their beds, with the lower half remaining secure thanks to the latched outer tailgate. GMC reps said it would be particularly useful for contractors, as a 4x8 sheet of drywall would fit within the open space, leaving the bottom of the bed free for drywall mud and other supplies.
GMC is quick to point out that the tailgate has been evaluated again and again for durability, and that the MultiPro system is the most proven, most tested tailgate in the company’s history. While it’s not perfect (the bed-extending feature could be more secure), it’s nevertheless a great gee-whiz feature that should impress prospective customers. And it does indeed solve a few common problems that come with with carrying cargo.
As you can probably tell, it's hard to explain clearly. Save yourself the headache of making sense of our words and just watch the video here.
