GMC Prep literary captures 4th straight state title

After winning a seventh-consecutive area title two weeks ago, the GMC Prep School literary team was crowned GHSA Class A-Public state champions Saturday.

The championship marks the fourth in a row for GMC Prep and three students came away from the competition with individual state titles.

“We are thrilled to successfully defend our state title,” said GMC Prep literary directors Mark Weaver and Jenny Morris in a joint statement. “Going into the competition we were optimistic but cautious. Our students knew they had to perform at an exceptionally high level to hold off some amazing schools gunning for the title. Our students continue to amaze us year after year. They know they have a legacy to uphold.”

Leading the way for the now four-time state champions were Tyler Gray, Jayla Lawrence, and Taylor Sherwood, who won individual titles in rhetorical essay, humorous oral interpretation, and international extemporaneous speaking respectively. Runners-up included the boys quartet of Zach Williams, Bryce Raburn, Jason Schneck, and Shane Byous; Sarah Wilson in dramatic oral interpretation, Dean Kelleher and Lindsey Knowles in duo oral interpretation; Taylor Sherwood in argumentative essay; and Anna Caldwell in personal essay. Madison Sloan finished fourth in girls solo to round out the high placers for GMC Prep at state.

“We have tremendous pride in our students,” said Weaver who serves as the school’s fine arts director. “They really pulled through. The majority of our team is made up of underclassmen with only two seniors competing this year. The younger students went into this competition wanting to prove themselves and live up to the legacy that was left by previous teams.”

Both Morris and Weaver said they have been working many hours in prepping material for the students to perform, so they could be as ready as possible once competition time arrived. With most of the literary team coming back next year, having many of the students return after seeing what a statewide competition is like is vital to the continued success of the program, according to the co-directors.

“I love to see students work hard towards a goal, and feel proud of their accomplishments,” Morris said.

Not only did the GMC Prep students have to prepare themselves for the competition, but they also needed to prep their campus as GMC served as host for both the GHSA public and private divisions. More than 60 schools throughout the state were represented in events throughout the day Saturday, so it was a significant undertaking to play host. The prep school students helped set up for the event and even worked in shifts to make sure everything ran as smoothly as possible. Weaver and Morris said they were thankful to have such fantastic students ready to work for themselves and their school.
