For Georgia Military College Prep sixth-grader Cadet Brian Sherwood, knowledge of geography comes naturally. That’s probably because his father, Rob Sherwood, is a history professor at Georgia Military College, and the Sherwood family has maps all throughout the house. Being in that environment at home is what Sherwood says got him into competing in the National Geographic Geography Bee.
“My dad is the master of random facts so I just learn random things. I look at maps a lot around the house,” Sherwood said.
Sherwood was selected to participate in the Georgia State Bee after competing against all sixth grade GMC students, as well as nine additional GMC middle school students in the finals of the school level.
“I was in my dad’s office when he showed me the email,” Sherwood said. “I jumped up and yelled ‘yes’ and pumped my fist in the air. I was really excited!”
Making his parents proud is something Sherwood says is important to him.
“My mom has been there and my dad has been to state too, so I wanted to keep up the tradition,” Sherwood said.
Sherwood’s teacher, Maj. Garland Riner, says he was not surprised when Sherwood shared the good news.
“Brian is very knowledgeable in social studies, especially geography,” Riner said. “He loves the subject and takes pride in giving background info to the class as we discuss countries and cultures.”
Although Sherwood clearly has vast knowledge of geography, he knows he still needs to prepare to compete at the state level.
“My dad said I need to start studying, actually. I’m going to get going on it soon; I’ve got about a month to get ready, I’m going to prepare,” Sherwood said.
Sherwood says he’s nervous to compete at the state level, but says that won’t stop him from going after his big goal... nationals.
“I really want to make it to nationals and have people say, ‘Milledgeville, Georgia ... where is that?’” Sherwood said.
But first, he’s got to take on the state competitors, and he says he’s got the motivation to do just that.
“I just don’t want to let my school down,” Sherwood said.
Sherwood heads to the Georgia state bee April 6.
