First round matchups set for GMC

The bracket for the GHSA A-Public state tournament has been set, and the GMC Prep basketball teams will host their respective first round matchups.

Though most first round matchups are scheduled to take place Friday or Saturday, the Lady Dogs will take the floor inside the Cordell Events Center tonight at 6 p.m. against Echols County. The GMC boys are scheduled to play Claxton High School Saturday at 6 p.m. Both GMC Prep teams narrowly missed out on earning a first round bye to the state tournament as they finished as the ninth-rated team in the single A public division. Though both teams would probably rather have earned the bye, the upside is both schools they are matched up against were the last ones to make it into the tournament.

The Lady Dogs are hoping to turn things around after a disappointing fourth-place finish in the region tournament. After losing just one game in the regular season they took losses in both the semifinals and consolation games held in Milledgeville last weekend. The Echols County Lady Wildcats share no common opponents with the GMC Prep girls this season. According to www.maxpreps.com, Echols has a 13-12 record up to this point in the season and most recently fell 84-41 to Telfair County in the Region 2-A semifinals last week. The winner of the state tournament first round matchup will face Bowdon who was rated eighth in the power ratings.

The GMC Prep boys finished second in the Region 7-A tournament after getting into an early hole against Wilkinson County. The Bulldogs made a late push, but ended up falling to the defending state champs. Their opponent the Claxton Tigers carry a 15-11 record according to MaxPreps, and they too do not share any common opponents with GMC Prep. They lost out in their region quarterfinal matchup against Montgomery County last week. The winner between GMC Prep and Claxton will advance on to face Woodville-Tompkins in second round play next week.
